Youth stepping up for SW

By Becky Walz,

Injuries have taken a toll recently on the South Winn girls basketball team (8-12, 7-8 UIC) but they haven’t stopped the young players from stepping up as the Warriors defeated West Central Friday before falling to New Hampton in non-conference action.

Road landslide
The Warriors’ pressure defense continues to disturb UIC teams and Friday’s game against West Central (3-15, 2-12 UIC) was no exception as South Winn defeated the Blue Devils 41-19.
Out of the gate South Winn had control of the league contest with a 10-3 first period advantage that grew to 24-11 by the half. Although the Warriors only gave up one point in the third they struggled offensively as well with just six to roll into the final eight minutes of play with a 30-12 lead.
“Offensively we were patient and took good shots all night long. We had two girls out with injuries, so we had a couple girls play more minutes than normal and they did a great job stepping up,” said coach Mike Gehling.
Karissa Wenthold had a good night shooting, scoring 16 points with four rebounds and two assists. Vanessa Bullerman put up 12 points and had four steals. Under the hoop it was Charlotte Moonen with a stellar performance with nine boards with Alexis Johanningmeier pulling down eight.

Scoring – Karissa Wenthold 16; Vanessa Bullerman 12; Ella Theis 4; Alexis Johanningmeier 4; Charlotte Moonen 3; Emmy Gehling 2
Rebounds – Moonen 9; Johanningmeier 8; Gehling 6; Theis 5; Wenthold 4; Adele Conway 3; Bullerman 2; Annie Hageman 1; Jayden Timp 1; Charlotte Hageman 1; Assists – Wenthold 2; Bullerman 2; Moonen 2; Theis 1; Johanningmeier 1; Gehling 1; Conway 1; Steals – Theis 4; Bullerman 4; Conway 3; Johanningmeier 2; Gehling 2; Wenthold 1; Moonen 1; Blocks – Theis 1; Gehling 1

Monday night
Stepping out of the UIC Monday, the Warriors hit Highway 24 to play at New Hampton (4-13, 0-5 NEIC), falling in the contest 61-45.
The Chickasaws hit the hardwood running to a 23-11 lead after the first period and held on to the advantage 32-24 at halftime. It was a hole the South Winn just couldn’t dig itself out of as New Hampton rolled in the second half to the victory.
Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
