Battling lower than average temps and wind earlier, the South Winn golf teams picked up two wins earlier this week over West Central and Postville on one of their home courses at the South Winn Golf & Country Club in Calmar.
Career best for Baumler
The South Winn boys golf team competed in a 9-hole event against West Central on Monday, claiming victory 171 to 225.
Setting a new career best for the second time in a week, junior Jordan Baumler fired a 39 to take the top spot, while Carson Wenthold earned runner-up honors with a 41.
Coming through with a 42 was Braiden Todd, with Jackson Goltz rounding out the team score with a 49. Carver Wenthold (54) and Cale Kleppe (57) were also on the varsity scorecard for the Warriors.
“Especially considering the conditions, the boys played really well. Jordan (Baumler) is playing some very good golf right now and Carson (Wenthold) continues to play really solid golf. It was good for Braiden (Todd) to rebound from a tough outing last week. Hopefully we can continue this trend as the postseason approaches,” said SW boys coach Mike Wenthold.
With only two girls on the links, West Central forfeited the girls’ score with South Winn fashioning a 225 Monday night. Katrina Hageman toured the course for a 47, good for the top spot. Coming through with a 55 was Brooke Steffans, while Avery Luzum fashioned a 61. Carding a 62 and rounding out the SW scorecard was Julia Carnesi. Paige Jaster (67) and Kylee Tieskoetter (72) also competed for the Warrior varsity.
Tuesday night
In their second consecutive day on the course, the Warriors hosted Postville and swept the competition Tuesday.
The boys defeated the Pirates 185 to 240. Medalist was South Winn’s Carson Wenthold who fired a 45. One stroke behind him was Carson Streeter, earning the runner-up spot with a 46. Braiden Todd and Matson Winings came through with 47s to wrap up the Warrior scorecard. Carding 48s were Jordan Baumler and Carver Wenthold.
Junior varsity golfers on the course included Goltz (44), Jamison Zweibohmer (48), Kleppe (51), Eric Kriener (51), Dawson Wenthold (51), John Donovan (55), Brady Lensing (56), Eli Higgins (59), Cody Meyer (60), Matthew Horstman (61), Aiden Feickert (63), Carson Straube (64) and Aiden Rothmeyer (73).
“It was a really windy day, and the team still played pretty steady golf. We’ve got some big meets coming up, so it’s good to see the boys respond well to adversity,” said Coach Wenthold.
It was a 20-stroke victory for the SW girls, 225 to 245, and another clean sweep of the medals.
Firing a 52, Katrina Hageman was the top linkster with Brooke Steffans coming through with a 54. Also counting for the Warriors were Avery Luzum and Bailee Frana. Luzum toured the course and finished the day with a 57, while Frana provided a 59. Julia Carnesi (62) and Aubrey Hageman (72) were also on the varsity scorecard.
