With a shot at second place in the conference, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (12-6, 11-3 UIC) did what it needed to Monday and Tuesday night — picking up two more wins. The Warriors are currently second in the Upper Iowa Conference behind MFL MarMac and just ahead of Clayton Ridge.
Kee High…again
In a higher scoring game than typically seen by the Warriors, South Winn took control of Monday’s rescheduled game at Kee High (5-13, 5-9 UIC) in the first and kept on going for the 86-68 win.
By the end of the opening period, the Warriors had pulled ahead 16-13 and extended the lead to 35-27 at halftime. South Winn had even bigger scoring quarters in the second-half, outscoring the Hawks 25-18 in the third and 26-23 in the fourth.
“On the offensive end, Dawson Wenthold had a night, and as a team we hit 10 threes which is our best of the season. We had nine guys hit the scoring column which is nice to see. Our defense was a little bit softer than I like to see, something we will address in practice,” said Coach Derek Taylor.
D. Wenthold had the hot hand with 24 points and three rebounds. Also in double figures was Carson Streeter with 15 points and Braiden Todd with 12.

On the road
South Winn was lucky that Tuesday’s close ball game at Postville (2-18, 2-13 UIC) went its way in the end, 67-61.
The Warriors fell behind early in the first quarter at 14-12 but rallied in the second to take the 37-26 lead to the locker room at the half. That lead was enough to hold off the Pirates in the second half.
“Postville played really well, and I think they caught our kids off guard. They did some things on the offensive end that gave us fits. Luckily, we had a nice balanced scoring effort from our guys, and we were able to hold them off,” said Coach Taylor.
This time four Warriors were in double digits with freshman Braiden Todd leading the way with 13 points. Brothers Keagen and Carson Streeter each put up 12 points while Kole Hageman came through with 11.
