By Becky Walz,
It has been a split effort this last week for the Warriors who have gone 2-2 as the South Winn boys’ basketball team (12-5, 7-4 UIC) defeated Charles City and Clayton Ridge back-to-back nights last week, before falling to Waukon and North Fayette Valley Monday and Tuesday.
Back in win column
After a second one-point loss to MFL MarMac earlier last week, the Warriors welcomed Charles City (6-8, 4-1 NEIC) to Calmar Thursday, winning 75-66.
Despite a solid showing in the first half, the Warriors trailed 34-32 at halftime. A 24-point offensive spark in the third period opened the lead for SW as the Warriors rolled to victory.
Five Warriors were in double figures with Carson Streeter paving the way with 24 points, seven steals, four rebounds and four assists. Braiden Todd put up 18 points to go with eight assists, four boards and three steals. Jordan Einck contributed 12 points, while Nolan Sabelka and Kaden Barton-Franzen each had 10. Barton-Franzen had a double-double with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots with his 10 points.

Easy win
The Warriors made it two wins in a row Friday as they blasted by Clayton Ridge (3-13, 2-9 UIC) at home 67-29.
Leading 27-12 at half, South Winn’s big 31-point third quarter put the game out of the Eagles’ reach and allowed the Warriors the chance to clear the bench with new faces on the floor.
Todd posted the double-double this time with 23 points and 10 rebounds as Barton-Franzen came just shy of the same with 10 boards and nine points. Todd also came up with a team-high five steals, while Streeter hit double digits with 15 points.

Waukon stormed out in the third frame to outscore the visitors 24-18 and led 47-40 with eight minutes remaining. While South Winn poured in 19 points in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough as Waukon produced 20 and the win.

Conference showdown

Nolan Sabelka and Todd got SW on the board with the first four points before NFV stormed back to take an 11-6 lead with 2:45 remaining in the first and closed out the opening frame with a 16-12 advantage. The Warriors remained within reach of the lead throughout much of the second period until the visitors closed out the quarter with five unanswered points to lead 31-22 at halftime.
