Four players were in double figures scoring Thursday night as the South Winn boys’ basketball team (8-3, 6-3 UIC) defeated Central Elkader (3-9, 2-7 UIC) 69-40 in a make-up game.
South Winn pulled ahead 17-8 in the first and kept its foot on the gas pedal, pulling ahead 31-18 at the break. Central nearly evened SW in the third in scoring with 16, but it wasn’t enough to scare the visiting Warriors as they poured in 21 points in the final eight minutes.
Matson Winings put up a double-double with 22 points and 11 boards. Kole Hageman contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Braiden Todd put up 15 points to go with seven assists, while Nolan Sabelka added 10 points and four steals.
“These kids always play hard, they never lack effort, but we definitely lacked focus Thursday night. We had 22 turnovers and shot 53 percent from the line. Those types of stats will cost us at some point,” noted Coach Derek Taylor. “We played really well for about four minutes in the fourth quarter and took the game from a 14 to 33 point lead. Definitely saw some things from a few guys that I really liked. I just have to make sure we play that way all game.”
South Winn was at Crestwood Monday, Jan. 15, and hosts Waukon Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m., in non-conference action. Friday, Jan. 19, the Warriors will return to league play as West Central visits Calmar.
