Warriors face first hurdles

Going on the road to start the season for back-to-back games, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-1, 1-0 UIC) faced some uphill battles.

Game one
North Butler started out strong in Monday’s opener, pulling ahead of the Warriors 21-2 after the first quarter. While South Winn continued to battle, increasing its offensive in each period, the Warriors couldn’t overcome the initial period, and fell 47-30.
The Warriors were led by Adrienne Winings who was in double figures with 11 points to go with four rebounds. Loleta Ryan dropped in seven points and nabbed three boards while Aubrey Willey and Chloe Wiltgen each provided four points. Ella Theis came away with four steals.
“We played hard and did a good job fighting until the end. We just kept fighting and clawing our way through and competed the rest of the night,” said Coach Justin Izer.

UIC opener
Facing another game with early adversity, the Warriors came out on top Tuesday over Clayton Ridge (0-1, 0-1 UIC) with a 35-30 victory.
Out of the gate, South Winn trailed the Eagles 7-0, a disadvantage that grew to 16-8 at halftime. Defensive intensity by the Warriors in the second half brought them back into the game and a lead. Karissa Wenthold hit a couple of crucial treys late in the game and knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the deal.
Wenthold led the charge with 14 points along with three steals, while Ryan dropped in seven points and Theis had six. Willey and Ryan each induced four steals, with Willey pulling down six boards.

The Warriors will host Turkey Valley Tuesday, Nov. 28, with the game slated to tip off at 6:15 p.m.
