Going on the road in Upper Iowa Conference action, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (4-8, 2-7 UIC) needed every last second to defeat Clayton Ridge (2-10, 2-7 UIC) Friday night in Guttenberg, 18-17.
It was slow going offensively for both the Warriors and Eagles throughout the game that began with a SW 6-5 lead after the first eight minutes. Coming off the bench, Janessa Zweibohmer hit a pair of treys to boost the Warriors to the lead. In the second period, Morgan Kriener hit two free throws before Ali Heying connected beyond the arc to put SW ahead 11-9 at halftime.
The Warriors trailed for the first time in the third period, 15-14 when the Eagles swished a three-pointer through the net with 3:19 left and that is where the score would sit as the fourth quarter got underway. With both teams failing to convert offensively early in the final period, SW finally knotted the game when Janessa Zweibahmer went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe with 2:24 to play. The Eagles weren’t done yet as they put the ball up and in with 46 ticks on the clock. Needing a score, SW pushed the ball up the court finding Zweibohmer under the basket for a shot and foul. The senior’s good free throw put the Warriors on top with the need to play stellar defense in the closing 30 seconds. CR had one final opportunity to tie or take the game from the free throw line with six seconds remaining, but fell short, allowing SW to take the narrow victory.
“A win is a win no matter how ugly. Our defense was phenomenal all night long as we trapped at the right times and forced them into tough shots. Offensively we scratched and clawed to get our points,” said Coach Justin Izer.
Zweibohmer led the offensive charge with nine points, while Heying added four points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Zweibahmer was on the board with three points, six boards and four steals. Josie Tieskoetter was busy under the basket with 12 rebounds.
The Warriors host Postville tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 11), then travels to West Central Friday, Jan. 14.
