Warriors close out six-game week

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn baseball team (8-4, 4-2 UIC) finished out a busy six-game week with non-conference wins over Oelwein and Denver.

Back in win column
South Winn put an end to their four-game losing streak with the 7-4 non-conference win over Oelwein on Wednesday night. Two seniors took the lead on the mound with Cael Kuboushek tossing four quality innings in the start and Briar Tigges coming up with a three-inning save. Jacob Herold had two hits on the night including a two out two run single in the first to get the Warriors the early 3-0 lead.
“After a tough stretch of games, it was nice to get one back in the win column. Cael and Briar overcame some miscues on our part defensively and got some big outs when they needed them,” said Coach Alex Smith. “Offensively we did just enough to produce some runs but know we have better days ahead.”

On the road
Concluding the week on the road Friday, the Warriors took the non-conference contest 3-1 from Denver.
South Winn exchanged runs with the Cyclones in the third inning and then plated their final two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Jacob Herold and sacrifice fly by Briar Tigges.
Ethan Luzum picked up the win on the mound throwing the final four innings, getting out of some critical situations. Jacob Herold had the defensive play of the game throwing out the leadoff runner at second base in the top of the sixth as the Denver batter tried to stretch a leadoff single into a double.
“This was a great way to finish out the week and one of the most complete games we have played in the season. Our pitching and defense were sharp and we had some timely hitting in certain situations to plate our three runs,” said Coach Smith.
