Warrior, Trojan boys earn UIC nods

Five South Winn and three Turkey Valley athletes were recently named to the All-Upper Iowa Conference boys basketball teams for their efforts during the 2024-25 season.

First team accolade
For the second time, Matson Winings was placed on the first team in the Upper Iowa Conference. The junior finished the season second in scoring for the Warriors with 265 total, averaging 17.7 points a game with a 55 percent field goal percentage. He also averaged 6.5 rebounds a night, pulling down 98 total boards (59 defensive, 39 offensive) to go with 21 blocked shots, 23 assists and 20 steals.

Second team awards
Two Warriors — Braiden Todd and Carson Streeter — and one Trojan, Logan Busta, were named to the UIC second team.
Todd, an honorable mention selection a year ago, moves up to the second team as No. 4 on the assist chart in the league with 118. The junior also claimed 62 steals which was fifth best in the conference while being the Warriors’ leading scorer with 307 total points (13.3 ppg). He was second in rebounding for South Winn with 72 defensive and 39 offensive boards.
Through the 16 games played by Streeter before an injury, the junior scored 262 total points and averaged 16.4 points a night, to finish third on the Warrior stat sheet. He also contributed 82 total rebounds (69 defensive, 13 offensive), 67 assists and 36 steals.
Busta finished his junior campaign in a tie for third in steals in the UIC with 64 as he moved up from an honorable mention nod a year ago. Draining 48 three point shots, the Trojan was second in the league and had a 49.6 effective field goal percentage. Busta completed the season with 370 total points, averaging 16.1 an outing with a 5.5 rebound per game average (126 total). Additionally he dished out 90 assists and came up with 20 blocked shots.

Honorable mention
Two athletes from each UIC team were named to the honorable mention list, including South Winn seniors Nolan Sabelka and Kaden Barton-Franzen. For Turkey Valley, JD Kruse and Jordan Kriener notched their inaugural awards.
Sabelka received his second straight honorable mention nod as a guard on the Warrior squad, finishing second to Todd in assists with 73 and steals with 43. The senior put in a total of 164 points and grabbed 76 total rebounds.
Earning his first All-UIC honor, Barton-Franzen finished in a tie for fourth in the league in blocked shots, accumulating 32. During his senior campaign he notched the top field goal percentage at 67.2 percent, putting in 198 points (8.6 ppg) while pulling down a team-high 159 rebounds (99 defensive, 60 offensive). He also contributed 31 steals and 25 assists.
Kruse was second in the conference in total rebounds, handling 194 total boards (112 defensive, 82 offensive) and was second on the Trojan squad in scoring with 255 points, averaging 11.1 per game. The junior also came up with 45 assists and 37 steals.
Kriener, a sophomore, racked up 219 total points in his first varsity season, averaging 9.5 points per game, along with a 6.1 rebounds per game (140 total). He was also second best for the Trojans in steals with 40 to go with 20 assists.
