By Becky Walz,
Week two of district play didn’t go as planned Friday night as the South Winn football team (1-2, 0-1) fell at home to Wapsie Valley (2-1, 1-0), 35-14.
“Our kids lost a hard fought game,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Unfortunately, we missed too many tackles on defense and special teams. We also had a couple costly turnovers on offense. Wapsie Valley is as good as advertised and will be the district favorite going forward.”
Scoring moments
Wapsie Valley got on the board first scoring on a three-yard burst. With the PAT, it was 7-0 early on. After the two Warrior squads traded possessions on a pick by Eric Greve, then a SW fumble, Wapsie Valley found the end zone again from two yards out, taking a 14-0 lead by the end of the first period. Breaking away from the SW defense in the second, the Wapsie Valley Warriors scored on a 54-yard carry and pulled ahead 21-0 by halftime.
The visiting Warriors went back at it in the third, scoring on a 53-yard scamper. Then South Winn junior Carson Streeter stepped into the quarterback role and led the red and white down the field, setting up a pass to Greve for South Winn’s first score of the game. Wapsie Valley wasn’t done yet, as another big play went 30-yards over the goal line, giving the visitors a 35-7 advantage. Streeter went back to the air later in the fourth, this time to Braiden Todd for a 16-yard pass that finished in the end zone and another SW score.
A quick peek
There were some individuals that stood out during the contest.
Carson Streeter had to step in at quarterback and led the Warriors down the field, going 6-for-8 in passes for 78 yards. Todd was 4-for-10 for 30 yards passing.
South Winn also had some tough running from Kyle Kuboushek and Landon Humpal at the fullback position. Kuboushek finished the night with 59 yards rushing in his 17 carries, while Humpal garnered 40 yards in 10 carries.
Todd and Greve combined for three interceptions in the defensive secondary with Humpal coming up with a fumble recovery. Kuboushek had 12 total tackles to lead the defense, while Todd and Greve each were there for 5.5 total tackles.
“Our pass coverage has been pretty solid the past three weeks, but we have to improve in our defensive run fits and tackling,” noted Coach Ohrt.
Homecoming
South Winn will celebrate homecoming Friday, Sept. 20, as the Warriors host Newman Catholic (2-1) in a non-district matchup. The Knights defeated Lake Mills last week 30-14. Last season South Winn defeated Newman Catholic 27-20.
