Vikes finish fifth at NEIC tourney

Putting the regular season and the Northeast Iowa Conference behind them, the Decorah volleyball team (13-17, 2-8 NEIC) finished fifth over the weekend at the league tournament.
Now, the Vikings will host Mason City (7-24) in Class 4A Region 5 action Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinal against Xavier in Cedar Rapids Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.
Thursday, the Vikes started the tournament in New Hampton with a challenge against Class 4A No. 15 Charles City (26-5) and fell in two sets, 15-21 and 11-21. Later, Decorah fell to Waverly-Shell Rock 2-0. Sets scores were 10-21 and 17-21.
On Saturday, Decorah traveled to Charles City to compete against New Hampton, Crestwood and Waukon. The Vikes dropped the match to the Class 3A No. 6 Chickasaws 2-0 (11-21, 9-21), before getting bested by the Cadets 2-1 (21-12, 18-21, 6-15). The day ended with a 2-0 over Waukon by sets of 25-23 and 25-11.
