The South Winn boys’ basketball team (11-5, 7-4 UIC) picked up a big win Monday over New Hampton and let a UIC win slip through its fingers Tuesday at Kee.

Early battle
While New Hampton (1-11) looked impressive in the first and fourth quarters, it was the Warriors who dominated the middle portion of Monday’s game that led to the 71-54 non-conference win.
A 15-13 first-quarter advantage for the Chickasaws didn’t last long, as the Warriors were able to force turnovers and turn them into transition buckets in the second period to lead 37-21 at the break. By the end of the third quarter South Winn held on to a 58-34 lead that never went away.
Pulling off a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds was Kole Hageman. Matson Winings finished the night with 16 points and nine boards while Braiden Todd contributed 12 points and five assists.
“We played really well in the first half, as we shot the ball well,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “I am proud of the way the boys played on both ends of the floor.”

Facing No. 10
Traveling to Class 1A No. 10 Kee (16-1, 12-1 UIC) Tuesday, the Warriors gave up one big quarter to the Hawks that led to the demise of the game 58-51.
Close throughout the first half, SW led 15-12 following the first eight minutes and held on to a slim advantage at the half 22-20. It was the third that spelled doom for the Warriors, as the Hawks outscored the visitors 24-12 to lead 44-34 with eight minutes to play. SW scratched away a few points from the deficit putting up 17 points in the final period but came up short of the comeback.
“This was a tough loss for the guys. We were in the game the whole way, actually leading a good chunk of the first three quarters. We made a couple costly errors on defense and shot 6-15 from the line and that was the difference,” said Coach Taylor.
Winings finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Todd was there for 11 points and four boards. Putting up eight points to go with six rebounds and five steals was Nolan Sabelka.

Later this week
The Warriors will host North Fayette Valley Friday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m., as well as the Booster Club Annual Cake Silent Auction to benefit the athletic programs at South Winn.
