The South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-3, 1-2 UIC) notched a win over LeRoy-Ostrander over the weekend and collided with MFL MarMac Tuesday night.
UIC clash
Tuesday night the Warriors had a tough match-up against MFL MarMac (3-3, 3-1 UIC) in Calmar, falling 44-14.
“MFL MarMac was a tough physical team and we did not match their intensity. Turnovers and an off night on our baskets led to a lopsided score. This will be a good learning experience for us to grow from,” said coach Mike Gehling.
South Winn was held to single digits in each of the four quarters leading to its demise. The Bulldogs opened the contest with an 8-4 advantage after the first and added 12 in each of the subsequent periods to roll over the Warriors.
Vanessa Bullerman and Karissa Wenthold each dropped in five points and came away with a pair of steals. Emmy Gehling led the charge off the rim with five boards while Bullerman pulled down three.
Scoring – Vanessa Bullerman 5; Karissa Wenthold 5; Adele Conway 2; Emmy Gehling 1; Adrienne Winings 1
Rebounds – Gehling 5; Bullerman 3; Assists – Wenthold 1; Steals – Bullerman 2; Wenthold 2; Gehling 2; Winings 1; Blocks – Winings 1
Border Battle
Eighteen steals and a big fourth quarter contributed to the Lady Warriors defeating LeRoy-Ostrander Saturday in the annual Border Battle held at Luther College. South Winn survived the Minnesota team to win, 49-41.
“I was very happy with how we played as we handled their size and aggressiveness very well. We will need to continue with this effort going forward to compete,” said coach Gehling.
The two teams matched up early, ending the first period knotted at 12-all. The Warriors tiptoed to a 21-19 lead at halftime. Thanks in part to a pair of free throws sunk by Chloe Wiltgen and Vanessa Bullerman in the final 20 second of the third, SW remained on top, 30-29. It was a battle for control of the ball in the final period with both teams heading to the charity stripe numerous times, allowing LeRoy-Ostrander to pull within four at 45-41 with 56 seconds in the game. However, free throws by Ella Theis and Bullerman in the closing seconds pulled the Warriors to the 49-41 win.
Bullerman led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points, also totaling four steals. Fellow freshman Alexis Johanningmeier added 12 points and five rebounds. Karissa Wenthold and Charlotte Moonen put up seven points apiece with Wenthold collecting seven boards. Wiltgen led South Winn in rebounds with eight and seven steals to go with her six points.
Scoring – Bullerman 13; Alexis Johanningmeier 12; Wenthold 7; Charlotte Moonen 7; Chloe Wiltgen 6; Ella Theis 3; Conway 1
