Trojans open season at S-F

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley baseball team (0-1) opened the 2021 season on the road at Sumner-Fred (2-0) Wednesday with the game ending in six innings, 16-6.
Striking first, the Trojans scored two runs in the opening frame. S-F plated a run in each of the first and second innings to knot the score. After the third, the score was still locked as both squads pushed two runs home, leaving it 4-4. The Cougars went on to add runs in the fourth and fifth innings and put the game away in the sixth with seven.
“The game got away from us a little in the sixth, but I was happy with the way we battled for the first game. We have several new players on the field and gained valuable experience,” said Coach Dan Stepan.
Four Trojans climbed the hill including Chase Hayek, Oliver Schmitt, Treyton Hulbert and Carson Busta.
TV had three hits in the contest with singles by Noah Hanson, Garrett Dietzenbach and Dylan Reicks. Hanson also had a pair of stolen bases, while Busta provided two RBI.
Turkey Valley has a full week on tap with three games in three days this week. The Trojans host Clayton Ridge in a varsity doubleheader Tuesday, June 1 at 4 p.m., then welcome Wapsie Valley for a non-conference contest Wednesday, June 2 at 4 p.m., and Thursday the Trojans will visit Oelwein for a JV/varsity twinbill with the first pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
