Trojans get best of Hawks

By Becky Walz,

Everything went right Friday night for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (11-5, 8-3 UIC) as the Trojans defeated Kee (7-7, 6-5 UIC) on the road, 51-38.

While the first quarter ended with a slim 4-3 Trojan advantage, the Red and White doubled up the Hawks in the second period to lead 16-9 at halftime. It was all TV in the second half, outscoring Kee 35-29.

“This was a great conference road win and nice bounce back from our loss earlier this week. Both teams got off to a slow start as defense prevailed. However, the girls stuck with it, played strong and were ready to go when called upon. Hailey Elsbernd made a couple nice hustle plays to pick up four points off the bench,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer.

Ali Hoffert provided a spark with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Jaycie Byrne added nine points, five assists and four steals to the stat book, while Kara Reicks contributed eight points and two steals. Jalyssa Blazek was busy on the floor with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Turkey Valley will remain at home this week with contests versus Central Elkader Tuesday, Jan. 26 and West Central Friday, Jan. 29. Both games are set to tip off at 6:15 p.m.
