Tough night for Viking matmen

Wrapping up the 2023 segment of the season, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team hosted Osage and Caledonia-Houston (Minn.) Thursday night, falling to both. The Vikes lost a close match to Caledonia-Houston, 39-36, and were overpowered by the Green Devils 48-27.
Gavin Knutson, Mason Avila and Brody Hanson won both their matches.
At 106 pounds, Knutson picked up a pair of falls, throwing Mason Van Gundy in 41 seconds, then Osage’s Connor Adams in 19 seconds. Avila defeated Caledonia-Houston’s Braxton Lange by an 8-3 decision before throwing Layne LaGue of Osage in 1:25. Wrestling at 165 pounds, Hanson pinned Will Allen of Caledonia-Houston in 3:41. He later earned a 5-1 decision over Heath Voigt of Osage.
Following the holiday break, the Vikes will be back at home against Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
