The tournament season has begun for the South Winn boys’ wrestling team as it competed at the Chris Davis Invite Saturday, hosted by Wapsie Valley.
Nashua-Plainfield, ranked No. 8 in Class 1A, won the event with 262.5 points. South Winn came in sixth with 89 points.
“It is early in the season and we have a lot to clean up, but it’s been a good week getting to see where we are with some things. I like the effort our kids are wrestling with and the guys have been receptive to their coaching and understanding where they need to get better at,” said coach Jacob Elsbernd.
Two junior Warriors, Kyle Kuboushek and Ray Lienau, won their divisions.
Kuboushek, ranked sixth in Class 1A, started the tournament strong as he threw Newman’s Urijah Paulsen in 1:52 in the 165-pound quarterfinal. The junior grappler claimed victory over seventh-ranked Garrett Miller of Wapsie Valley by a 12-2 decision to advance to the finals. There he outlasted Jackson Carey of Nashua-Plainfield to win the 10-8 decision and the title. Carey is currently ranked sixth in Class 1A at 157 pounds.
At 215 pounds, Lienau took the quarterfinal round with a 16-0 tech fall over West Marshall’s Evan Meester. Facing Jaxon McDonald of Nashua-Plainfield, the junior got the pin in 3:19. Lienau later put Caleb Marr of Riceville on his back in 5:23 to win the title.
Landen Schnuelle also made the finals for the Warriors. The 157-pound wrestler got a 17-2 tech fall over Burke Shane of Riceville in the opening round of the day and threw Alex Baltes of Rockford in the quarterfinal, needing 3:52. It was a 17-11 decision win for the junior in the semifinal over Cael Weisskopf of HLV before giving up the final by an 8-0 major decision to Nashua-Plainfield’s Devon Blanchard.
Also making the podium for the Warriors were Kolton Brummond at 285 pounds in fourth place, Clayton Kuboushek at 120 pounds in fifth place and Gavin Thuente at 113 pounds in sixth place.
