Competing in its third meet in five days, the Decorah girls swim and dive team set 41 new individual and relay season best times Tuesday in Dubuque. The Vikes participated in a double dual with Dubuque Senior and Waterloo, falling to Senior 130-53 and Waterloo 124-61.
“I am proud of how the girls are competing this season. We know we are a young, inexperienced team that will only get better as the season progresses. We have had three meets in five days, school starting, and 13+ hours of bus rides since last Thursday. Last night in Dubuque we set 41 new individual and relay season best (SB) times. To put that in perspective, that number represents 84% of all the total swims last night! We now have a 10-day break before our next week, which allows us to put in a good block of training,” said Coach Loran Storts.
In varsity action, Liz Bucksa won silver twice. She touched the wall second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:24.93 and posted a time of 1:14.58 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 200-yard medley relay of Sydney Thompson, Brenna Parker, Bella Sailor and Bucksa won bronze in 2:04.50, while Joey Vobr took third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:21.44. Sailor later claimed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.09. Also bringing home bronze was the 200-yard freestyle relay of Kendra Elsbernd, Bucksa, Lauren Luzum and Bridget Bentley. The quartet posted a time of 1:55.65.
The Vikes are now off until Saturday, Sept. 9, when they compete at the Wahawk Invite hosted by Waterloo West at Central Middle School. The meet is set to begin at 12 p.m.
