Clash in Calmar
With nearly a standing room only crowd on hand to see what looked like a playoff game, the Warriors battled UIC leader MFL MarMac (5-0, 3-0 UIC) into overtime Tuesday night, falling 60-59.
Aside from the first charity toss and a bucket, the Warriors led throughout the first quarter, making it 14-11 after eight minutes of play. The Bulldogs managed to pull even with SW in the second several times; however, the Warriors maintained a slim 23-22 advantage at the break. A fast and furious pace returned in the third period leaving the two UIC teams deadlocked at 39 with eight minutes to play. South Winn led by as many as six in the final quarter with 51 ticks on the clock which was erased by a sunk basket, free throw and long ball as time ran out with a 54 tie. With four more minutes to play, it was back to a fast pace that saw Carson Streeter hit a free throw and a layup to give the Warriors at 57-54 lead with 1:52 remaining. But the Bulldogs refused to lie down with a pair of back-to-back buckets. Braiden Todd hit a short jumper with 25 seconds remaining pulling SW back ahead 59-58, giving MFL MarMac just enough time to hit what would be the game winning shot.
