SW still in hunt for UIC crown

By Becky Walz,

Despite needing five sets, South Winn (10-17, 6-1 UIC) secured the conference win over Central Elkader (11-23, 4-4 UIC) Tuesday to remain in contention for the top UIC spot.
The Warriors were familiar with Central having seen them twice at tournaments this season, dropping both of those matches. Tuesday night was a different story, as South Winn rebounded from an opening set loss, 21-25, to capture the next two sets by 25-19 scores. Central didn’t go away though forcing a fifth set (21-25) and in what was a back-and-forth affair, South Winn came away with some big plays down the stretch to close out the match, 15-12.

“After dropping our only match last week against Clayton Ridge, we had a lot of time to fine tune some things and prepare for this match. I felt like we really handled ourselves well on the floor by staying within ourselves and settling down when we faced adversity. I’m really proud of how we kept our composure,” said Coach Alex Smith. “It was a goal of ours this season to contend for a conference championship and this was a must win match for us to set up that opportunity.”
Katrina Hageman had an impressive night with 22 kills, 33 digs and went 10-for-13 at the service line. Ivey Franzen had 12 kills. With six kills apiece were Abby Wagner and Morgan Kleve. Wagner also had 11 digs and a 24-for-24 serving mark, while Kleve was 13-for-14 in serves. Avery Humpal pounded down five kills. Handing out assists were Avery Luzum with 16 and Hailey Riehle with 15. Riehle, a senior, also had 19 digs and was 17-for-17 in serves, while Luzum served 14-for-18 with four aces. Also in double figures for digs were Morgan Kriener with 16 and Josie Hageman with 11.
South Winn will host Turkey Valley Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. It is also Dig Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness for the Warriors as they look to take the Upper Iowa Conference title.
