The South Winn volleyball team (5-8, 1-0 UIC) is picking up the pace after a slow start to the season, going 4-1 at Jesup over the weekend and opening the conference schedule with a victory over Kee Tuesday night.
Jesup recap
The Warriors had a slow start to Saturday’s tournament against the host Jesup, but were able to end both sets better than they began, dropping the match 0-2 (14-21, 11-21).
Valley Lutheran and Central Elkader were both solid, controlled wins, as the Warriors started to take care of their jobs a little better throughout, which led to a very good first set against North Linn. South Winn defeated Valley Lutheran 2-0 (21-5, 21-6) and Central Elkader 2-0 (21-16, 21-14).
In what could easily be a toss-up game against North Linn, the SW coaches were proud of the way the girls came out and established themselves early in the set, winning set one 21-12. That gave them a lot of confidence to come back from 17-18 in the second to win 21-19.
South Winn’s primary lineup took care of business in set one against West Central 21-5, The Warriors ended up dropping set two (20-22), not taking care of the ball, and then taking care of business in set three, 15-7.
Alyssa Holthaus had an outstanding day out of middle with 15 kills to two errors on 37 attempts, totaling a .357 hitting percentage on the day. Ella Theis led her team well and tallied 50 assists on the day while accounting for eight aces going 96 percent in serves. Chloe Wiltgen had a strong day on the other side of the ball defensively with 46 digs and served eight aces from the line while serving at 91 percent. Bailee Frana and Addison Timp both put up three kill blocks each on the day.
“We’re proud of this team’s resilience. It is a tough schedule for us to start the season, and they showed up Saturday, believing we were one of the best teams there,” said Co-Head Coach Ethan Adams.
