For the second season in a row, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (7-15) will be facing Aplington-Parkersburg in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals on the Falcons’ home court after defeating Postville Saturday. The Warriors advance to the game which will be played tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 14), in Aplington at 7 p.m.
What happened
The season remains alive for the Warriors as South Winn defeated Postville 57-26 Saturday night in Calmar in the first round of Class 2A Region 5 playoff action.
Postville ends the year 2-20.
“This was a great game in a great atmosphere as the girls played hard and battled all night,” said Coach Justin Izer. “We did a nice job overcoming a slow start on the offensive side of the ball. The final three quarters we really executed our offense and played great defense to really open the game up.”
It took until there was 3:09 left in the first period for either team to put points on the board and it was in the form of a trey by Karissa Wenthold. By the end of the opening frame, the Pirates held a 6-5 advantage. That lead was short-lived as the Warrior offense picked up the pace and outscored Postville 16-4 in the second quarter to lead 21-10 at the half. South Winn padded its lead with another 15 in the third, taking a comfortable 36-20 lead into the final quarter.
Senior Morgan Kleve was on fire, scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Josie Tieskoetter put up 13 points to go with eight steals and seven rebounds. It was eight points and eight rebounds for senior Josie Hemesath.
