Class 2A No. 4 Dyersville Beckman (14-7) was able to strike early and often offensively to cruise to a 14-4 victory over the South Winn baseball team (14-5, 11-0 UIC).
The Warriors put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game but Beckman was able to respond with another big inning in the sixth to put the game away.
“We knew we would face a top notch opponent this evening and their starting pitcher coming off of an injury was really tough on us in his first start in the year. Our guys look forward to these big matchups, and unfortunately this was not our night,” said Coach Alex Smith.
South Winn had five hits in the contest — a double by Carson Streeter and singles by Carson Wenthold, Jamie Kuennen, Kole Hageman and Brody Tieskoetter.
On the hill, Braiden Todd took the loss with Hageman and Tieskoetter throwing in relief.
The Warriors will be at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 20, at 4 p.m. South Winn will be at Postville Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m., then travel to Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, June 23, for a 5 p.m. varsity game. The Warriors will conclude the week at home Saturday, June 24, in a four-team tournament with Osage, Kee and Williamsburg starting at 9:30 a.m.
