SW girls win UIC; harriers earn conference

The Class 1A No. 3 South Winn girls’ cross country team has made it four years in a row as the Warriors claimed the Upper Iowa Conference title again Wednesday at Silver Springs Golf Course in Ossian. Turkey Valley did not have enough runners to compete for team titles but did have three harriers earn all-UIC honors for finishing in the top 15.
The UIC meet, originally scheduled for Thursday, was moved up a day to avoid the heavy rains that were forecasted to hit northeast Iowa.

Varsity girls
The SW girls earned first place with 29 points with North Fayette Valley finishing second with 55. The Warrior girls had an average time of 21:24 with four runners breaking the top 10.
Central senior Jaydin Dettman was the individual champion, breaking the tape in 20:47.0.
Freshman Annie Hageman, ranked 27th in Class 1A, came home with silver in 20:57.3 for her first all-conference honor. Taking home her fourth all-UIC nod with a third-place finish was Class 1A No. 25 Josie Tieskoetter. The senior had a time of 20:58.3. Ava Franzen also earned her first all-conference honor, finishing in 21:03.6, good for fourth. Maddy Jansen took ninth in 21:40.3, earning her second all-conference honor. She was 10th a year ago. The final scorer for the Lady Warriors was Izzy Kuboushek. Last year she was the junior varsity champion and crossed the finish line in 13th for varsity this season in 22:18.4.
Finishing 14th last year and again this year, Karissa Wenthold also was all-conference. The junior had a time of 22:25.9. Freshman Lauren Ondrashek was the Warriors seventh harrier and just missed making all-conference in 22:49.1, taking 18th.

Leading the boys
In the boys’ race, North Fayette Valley ran to the front of the pack, winning the team title with 62 points. Central Elkader wasn’t far behind with 75 points. The Warriors used solid pack running to earn third place with 86 points and an average time of 19:40.
Claiming the individual boys’ title in 17:18.0 was Jacob Schellhorn of MFL MarMac.
Two SW harriers earned all-UIC honors — Abe Conway and Brad Dahl — who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Last year Conway was just on the outside of the all-UIC harrier and improved to post a time of 18:07.0. Dahl, a sophomore, was 25th a year ago and shaved over a minute off his 2022 time, stopping the clock at 18:35.6 Wednesday. Bo Wangsness, Lukas Weiss and Brennan Franzen finished nearly in succession to fill out the Warrior scorecard. Wangsness toured the course in 20:24.5, good for 26th, while Weiss, a junior and in his first season in cross country, posted a time of 20:31.9 to take 28th. Franzen’s time of 20:41.0 took 29th place.
Sophomores Eli Higgins and Diego Flores also ran varsity for the Warriors. Higgins placed 40th in 21:45.3, edging Flores’ time of 21:45.6.

Trojan honors
Five Turkey Valley runners were on the course in Ossian Wednesday with three taking home all-UIC honors for their performances.
Bella Stika crossed the finish line in 21:04.5, taking fifth in the varsity girls’ race, while fellow freshman Hazel Nieman shaved 65 seconds off her previous personal best time to stop the clock at 22:29.1, taking 15th and the final conference nod.
Earning his second all-UIC honor, Russell Nieman toured the course in 18:43.6, good for eighth place. Finishing 19th, senior Bode Balk ran a personal best by 27 seconds, breaking the 20-minute barrier with a time of 19:58.6.
