Overnight rain showers quickly dissipated and the weather was nice throughout the day Monday for the UIC boys tournament. The Big Rock 18-hole course was a good high school golf test across the undulating fairways and tricky pin placements. In a close Upper Iowa Conference race, it was MFL MarMac that came out on top of the UIC boys meet Monday at Big Rock Golf Club in Fayette.
The Bulldogs fired a 316 team score with South Winn tallying a 346. Turkey Valley came in fifth with a 367.
Four Warriors and two Trojans earned all-conference recognition as the top-15 place winners are honored.
MFL’s Quinn McGeough was overall medalist with a two-over 73, followed by his Bulldog teammate Ben Krambeer (78) in the runner-up spot.
Baumler leads SW
Junior Jordan Baumler came through for the Warriors with an 83 (40-43), good for fifth place. Carding an 86 (44-42), Carson Wenthold was next-best in 11th place, while Carson Streeter carded an 88 (39-49) to take 14th place. In a tie for 15th, Carver Wenthold fashioned an 89 (42-47) to conclude South Winn’s scorecard. Braiden Todd fired a 96 (47-49) with Jackson Goltz also on the course with a 106 (54-52).
“The boys performed brilliantly. Our conference is much improved this year, and coming in second really was a fantastic result. We had four all-conference performers, which was incredible. I know we had some guys who didn’t feel like they played their best, but we also had some guys who stepped up and played their best golf of the year. This is what is needed to put the team in position to be successful. I’m thrilled with our play,” said SW Coach Mike Wenthold.
Trojan recap
Turkey Valley was led by Oliver Schmitt and Calvin Bodensteiner. Schmitt (45-40=85) earned All-UIC honors for the second year in a row as he tied for eighth place as he heated up after a slow start. Senior Calvin Bodensteiner (44-45=89) was very steady as he finished in a tie for 15th to notch All-UIC honors as well. Caleb Kurtenbach (48-48=96) and senior Carson Busta (46-51=97) also counted for the Trojans. Completing the Turkey Valley post-season scorecard was Garrett Dietzenbach (55-58=113) and Braylen Byrne (56-63=119).
Sectionals
The boys continued postseason play Wednesday at sectionals. South Winn is in Class 2A and competed at Lake Mills, while the Trojans were in Class 1A action in Guttenberg. District competition will take place Monday, May 15, at 10 a.m. If the Warriors advance as a team or any individuals advance, they will play at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike, while Turkey Valley would play at Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City.
The sectional/district team champion and runner-up will advance to the district/state competition. The top two overall individual players (plus ties) at each site from among the non-qualifying teams will advance from each sectional to district tournament.
