It’s back in the win column for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (2-2, 1-0 NEIC) following Tuesday’s NEIC contest against Crestwood after falling to Class 3A No. 13 Center Point-Urbana over the weekend.
Finally home
Getting their first taste of the energy of the home crowd, the Vikings pounced on Crestwood (0-3, 0-1 NEIC) Tuesday night with a big 53-31 victory.
“This was an excellent team win for our girls. The girls came out with a lot of enthusiasm and energy to start the game. We also did a great job of staying consistent from quarter to quarter,” said coach Blake Moen. “Our defensive effort was outstanding, and offensively we did some good things to get good looks.”
Decorah won the first quarter 12-7 and never looked back, extending its lead to 33-22 at halftime. In the second half, the Cadets got within seven, 37-30 before the Vikings took off on a 16-1 run to finish the game, giving up one free throw in the final quarter.
Claire Storhoff and Brooklyn Fromm were a force with 15 points apiece with Sydney Thompson joining, the duo in double digits with 11 points. Storhoff also provided seven boards, five steals and three assists, while Fromm pull down five boards. Thompson was there for three caroms and a trio of steals. Liz Bucksa put up six points to go with seven rebounds.

Over the weekend
Going on the road in non-conference action Saturday, the Lady Vikes fell to Class 3A No. 13 Center Point-Urbana (2-2), 58-42.
Decorah led 13-12 after the first eight minutes; however, a slow offensive second period left the Vikes trailing 25-19 at halftime. The Vikings got going again in the third, scoring 10 points before the Stormin’ Pointers took over in the fourth, outscoring the visitors 22-13.
Storhoff had the hot hand with 13 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Renae Wilson added 12 points and eight boards. Bucksa chipped in seven points and came up with six rebounds, while Fromm provided six points and four caroms. Hjelle contributed the final four points for the Vikes to go with six rebounds.
“I’m really proud of the fight and grit from our girls. Coming off a tough loss Tuesday, they came to practice the rest of the week on a mission to get better and clean up miscues. Though we didn’t win, they took a senior led, state-qualifying type team to the fourth quarter, and we improved from game two to game three,” said coach Moen.
