South Winn ends season 18-6 with Wildcats

By Becky Walz,

Full court pressure from Maquoketa Valley put the South Winn boys basketball team on the defensive throughout Thursday’s district semifinal contest as the Warriors fell to the Wildcats 52-30 at home.
The Warriors end the season 18-6, while Maquoketa Valley improves to 16-6 and faced Don Bosco (18-6) Tuesday night in Gilbertville in the district final.
Both teams were a little cool to kick off the Class 1A District 6 semifinal with it taking nearly two minutes before the Wildcats dropped in the first basket. In transition, SW’s Braiden Todd couldn’t get the ball to fall; however, trailing the shot was Nolan Sabelka who got the bucket near the halfway point of the first frame. Then, Carver Wenthold lit up the scoreboard, firing a shot off from behind the arc to give the Warriors a 5-4 lead. The advantage didn’t last long as Maquoketa Valley closed out the quarter on a 6-1 run to lead 10-6.
After sitting for nearly half of the first period with two fouls, Matson Winings made a difference early in the second with a pair of buckets and a charity toss to trail 15-11. A layup by Jordan Einck put the Warriors within two early in the frame. With the Wildcats maintaining the lead, an old-fashioned three point play by Logan Tieskoetter closed within one, 17-16. The long ball was falling for the visitors while none of the Warrior shots found the bottom of the net, leaving SW trailing 28-18.
Following the break in the locker room, SW’s Braiden Todd found the hoop first; however, the shots continued to fall for the Wildcats as they answered with a trey, eventually pulling ahead 38-24 with eight minutes remaining. The fourth quarter fell much like the others for the Warriors, without much success in getting the ball to fall through the rim.
Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
South Winn will see three seniors graduate off the squad come May including Nolan Sabelka, Kaden Barton-Franzen and Irving Flores.
