Small but mighty; SW girls young on the links

By Becky Walz,

Youth will be the key word this season for the South Winn girls’ golf team, with just six athletes taking the course this spring for the Warriors.
Leading the squad is head coach Glenna Munuswamy.
“This year we have a lack of experience,” said the third-year coach. “Not having a season in 2020 has created a major hole in the girls’ program. We lost a year of gained experience and lost players who would have been leading this team. We are really starting from scratch.”
Senior Sydney Becker will pilot the team leadership as the lone returnee and will be joined by junior Ruthie Frana. Four freshmen will also step onto the course including Katrina Hageman, Brooke Steffens, Hannah Pahl and Annisten Ondrashek.
“Becker showed promising scores in her sophomore year,” said Coach Munuswamy. “Our younger players are eager to learn and have been developing quickly. Our goal has to be to continue to get stronger as the season progresses.”
While the team may be small, there’s also talent as Munuswamy would like to see the Lady Warriors finish in the middle of the Upper Iowa Conference. With the loss of last year’s season, the coach said it is hard to know where any team sits, but she expects to see North Fayette Valley lead the UIC.
Munuswamy sees a group of athletes excited about golfing and notes how fun it makes practices and meets.
“That excitement will allow us to work toward a goal of simply progressing each meet and each day of practice,” concluded the Lady Warrior coach.
