The third quarter doomed the South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-8, 1-7 UIC) as the Warriors dropped their first game of the 2022 season to Kee High (5-5, 4-2 UIC) Tuesday night, falling 44-32 on the road.
The Warriors but gave up four points in the closing minute of the first quarter after seeing a 9-9 tie. Kee attempted to pull away in the second period, but never led by more than the initial four, holding on to a slim 19-18 lead at the break. The two-point third quarter for South Winn was the difference of the game as Kee rolled ahead 30-20 and slammed the door on the Warriors in the fourth period.
“The girls fought hard all night and played great defense most of the night,” said Coach Justin Izer. “Offensively we had some good looks shots that just didn’t want to fall especially in the third quarter. We need to try to eliminate some of the long scoring droughts that we seem to get into. If we can eliminate some of those then it should be an exciting second half of the season.”
Senior Janessa Zweibahmer had a double-double for the Warriors with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Josie Tieskoetter also provided 13 points. On the board with three points apiece were Janessa Zweibohmer and Morgan Kleve.
South Winn is back in action at Clayton Ridge Friday, Jan. 7, then hosts Postville Tuesday, Jan. 11.
