Six events headed to state

The Decorah boys’ swim team will be well represented at state with six events qualifying Saturday at Dubuqe Hempstead. 

In the team race, the Vikings finished with 235.50 points in fourth place. Linn-Mar scored the team title with 452.50 points. Cedar Falls earned 350 points to take second.

“I am very proud of all of my swimmers and the hard work they put in this season,” said Coach Laura Storlie.


Qualifiers

The 200 medley relay started the day with a runner-up finish in 1:41.71. Competing as part of the quartet were Drew Chamberlain, Isaac Knaack, Gus Grimsad and Ryan Lubahn. The Vikes enter the state meet seeded 17th.

Two events later Grimstad punch his first individual ticket in the 200 individual medley and is seeded 12th entering the state meet. This marks the senior’s fourth state appearance for the Viking as he bested the field four seconds to win the event in 1:59.41. He later touched the wall simultaneously with Linn-Mar’s Aiden Carstensen in the 100 butterfly in 51.40 seconds to tie for gold. Grimstad is seeded seventh heading to the state meet.

Chamberlain also qualified for two individual events on time. The junior posted a time of 1:49.72, to finish fifth in the 200 freestyle and earn a 26th seed. He added a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 5:00.91 and is seeded 32nd.

The same foursome from the 200 medley relay of Lubahn, Chamberlain, Knaack and Grimstad combined at the end of the day in the 400 free relay for a time of 3:24.65, qualifying on time for state with a 22nd seed.


State information

Following venue and event format changes due to COVID-19, the 2021 IHSAA State Swimming Championships are now scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13, at Linn-Mar High School in Marion. Previously the meet was set as a two-day preliminary and final format at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The total number of qualifiers for the one-day state meet with timed finals will include 32 entries for individual events and 24 teams for relay events from six state-qualifying meet sites.

Due to capacity limitations, spectators will not be permitted at any IHSAA postseason swimming event.
