After day one of the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament last week, the Class 1A No. 1 Decorah girls wrestling team sat in first in the team standings; however, as the event wrapped up Friday the Vikes fell to second with one of their own standing atop the podium.
Raccoon River-Northwest took the top spot with 344.5 points while Decorah secured runner-up with 287.5 points. Ankeny rounded out the top three teams with 277.
“This is a great tournament with great competition. It’s valuable experience to wrestle in a two-day format, in the same venue that will host the Girls State Championships in February,” said head coach Gene Adams. “There were many individual victories captured throughout the two-day event; something all of wrestlers can use as momentum moving forward.”
Three Vikings reached the title match — Chloe Sheffield at 100 pounds, Ana Simon at 145 pounds and Madysen Lippe at 235 pounds.
Ranked second in Class 1A, Simon was the lone champion of the event for Decorah as she had a first round bye and threw Charlene Prazak of Mason City in 1:06 in round two. It took the junior just 32 seconds to turn Clinton’s Lauren Whitney in the quarterfinal. Moving into the semifinal, Simon faced Class 2A No. 4 Naomi Templeman of Raccoon River-Northwest and eventually put her shoulders on the mat in 5:02. Battling through all three periods, the Viking won the 13-6 decision in the final over Class 1A No. 4 Eve Skrocki of Wahlert.
“Anastasia Simon really took charge of her bracket and dominated her competition,” said coach Adams.
Following an opening round bye, Sheffield, the Class 1A No. 2 wrestler, pinned Class 1A No. 3 Sophia Calpito of Charles City in 1:54 in round two. It took an 8-4 decision for the senior to defeat Class 2A No. 5 Cassidy McCallister of Raccoon River-Northwest in the quarterfinal. Moving swiftly in the semifinal, Sheffield threw Freedom’s Katherine Cook in 22 seconds to move into the title match. It was there that Sheffield finally suffered her only loss of the tournament to Lilly Breeden of Liberty who won by a 7-1 decision, leaving the Viking to settle for silver.
A first round bye led for a round two fall for Class 1A No. 11 Lippe who threw Sara Willis of Huntley in 1:42 before pinning Marion’s Harper Griffin in 44 seconds in the quarterfinal. A 2-1 decision victory for the Viking grappler in the semifinal over Emelia Reyes of Cedar Rapids Prairie led to a trip to the final. It was there that Lippe got turned by Class 2A No. 6 Reese Baxter of Raccoon River-Northwest, falling in 3:24.
Five other Vikings reached the podium including Class 1A No. 2 Lauren Luzum (155 lbs., 3rd place), Class 1A No. 3 McKenzie Tollefson (140 lbs, 4th place), Amelia Wadsworth (135 lbs., 6th place), Class 1A No. 7 Kamryn Steines (190 lbs., 6th place) and Ellie Adams (120 lbs., 10th place).
