Seven-game win streak alive

Falling to numerous ranked opponents to open the season, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (8-3, 4-0 NEIC) is now picking up the pace and finished the 2023 portion of the season on a seven game win streak.

At Hudson
The third quarter made the difference in Thursday’s game at Hudson (3-7), as Decorah brought home the 63-46 win.
The two squads were off and running with a fast-paced opening period that the Vikes won 20-15. The offenses quieted in the second, as the teams combined for just 17 points with Decorah carrying a 28-24 lead into the locker room. The Viking defense did its job in the third, giving up just four points, allowing Decorah a 45-28 lead with eight minutes remaining. Both teams tallied 18 points in the final period, giving the Vikes the win before the holiday break.

Catching up
Playing at Waukon (3-5, 0-3 NEIC) Tuesday, Dec. 19, the earned their fourth conference win, 58-34.
Decorah’s defense held they Indians to six points in the first quarter, giving the Vikes a 14-6 lead. At halftime, Decorah led 25-17. In the third, Decorah pulled away, scoring 16 points and holding the home team to nine.
Yazmeen Whitsitt was on fire, scoring 30 points to lead the team. Brooklyn Fromm put up 12, while Claire Storhoff finished the night with 10 points, seven steals and six rebounds.

After the new year
Decorah will return to action at home Tuesday, Jan. 2, in a non-conference match-up against MFL MarMac at 7:30 p.m., then returns to NEIC competition against Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, Jan. 5, also on the home hardwood.
