Second half lifts SW girls over Central

By Becky Walz,

A big third quarter with a stronger defensive fourth gave the South Winn girls basketball team (9-12, 8-8 UIC) a victory in the final regular season game Friday, knocking off Central Elkader (9-13, 7-9 UIC) at home 35-28.
The Warriors fell behind early 8-7 after the first frame and tumbled to a 14-9 deficit at halftime. Coming out of the locker room with vigor SW narrowed the margin to 25-23 with eight minutes to play. In the final quarter the South Winn defense held the visiting Warriors to just three points while pouring in 12 to take the win.
“Our defense once again was the difference, only allowing 28 points. It was a team effort on offense where almost everyone contributed,” said coach Mike Gehling. “Chloe Wiltgen had a good second half scoring all 10 of her points. I am very happy with the way we finished out the regular season and I can’t wait to see how we do in the postseason.”
Wiltgen led the Warriors with her 10 points in addition to claiming five rebounds. Vanessa Bullerman put up six points and nabbed six boards. Senior Karissa Wenthold added five points and five steals in the effort.
