Second half lifts No. 2 Vikes over Winterset

By Becky Walz,

A different venue was the backdrop for the Decorah boys basketball team (17-1, 7-0 NEIC) Saturday as the Vikings played Winterset (4-15) at Wells Fargo Arena, earning the 58-46 win over the Huskies.
It took a strong second half effort by the Vikings to claim the victory as Decorah trailed 17-10 after the first eight minutes and continued to lag 31-22 at the break. Then the tides turned in the Vikes favor as the ball began to fall through the net at breakneck speed while the Decorah defense buckled down, giving up just five points in the third. That gave the Vikes a 45-36 lead with eight minutes left in the game, a lead Decorah never relinquished.
Pacing Decorah offensively with 25 points was Cael LaFrentz. The junior also provided 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Zachary Driscoll put up 22 points, pulled down 11 boards and came away with four steals. Under the basket, Carter Dlhy had a monster game with 18 rebounds.
