Season opener triangular falls away from SW

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn volleyball team (0-2, 0-0 UIC) opened up the season at home on Thursday hosting a triangular against Dunkerton and Class 2A No. 12 Hudson. The Warriors fell short on the scoreboard, dropping both matches, but there was some high level volleyball played in the gym.
The Warriors dropped the opening match to Dunkerton, 0-2. Set scores were 20-25 and 12-25. Alyssa Holthaus and Addison Timp paved the way with four kills each with Ella Theis dishing out nine assists.
Hudson then defeated Dunkerton two sets to one before the Warriors took on Hudson to finish the evening. South Winn battled the No. 12 team in the state falling short in the two sets, 19-25 and 22-25. Ella Theis had 13 assists with Ivey Franzen leading the team with five kills in the match. Defense and serving were keys for the Warriors keeping it close. Chloe Wiltgen, Ella Theis and Allison Hageman combined for 35 digs and the team served 97.8 percent missing just one serve in the match.
“Our girls were excited to open up the season and opening up against some strong competition gives us a great indicator on where we were at. We made some great strides throughout the evening and got settled in on both defense and offense. We look forward to getting back in the gym for practice and getting set for our upcoming quad at Cresco,” said co-head coach Alex Smith.
South Winn will be at Crestwood in a quadrangular with the Cadets, Waukon and Central Elkader Thursday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m.
