The season continues to be busy for the South Winn boys wrestling team as it competed in the conference tournament Thursday night then participated in the Doug Trees Bearcat Invite at North Butler Saturday.

Two Warrior grapplers reached the finals Thursday night in Riceville, as South Winn battled in the individual Upper Iowa Conference tournament to seventh place.
North Fayette Valley ran away with the team title with 259.5 points as Riceville finished a distant second with 176.5. With a smaller than normal squad due to injuries, the Warriors garnered 79 points.
South Winn junior Landen Schnuelle garnered the top spot at 175 pounds. A quarterfinal bye set up a semifinal match with Postville’s Landon Guese who the Warrior turned in 4:52. Schnuelle escaped the final with a 6-1 decision over Kenny Kerr of NFV for the title.
Ray Lienau was also in the finals at 215 pounds. He too had a quarterfinal bye before taking an 11-0 major decision from Emmanuel Hernandez of NFV. In the final, the junior fell to Postville’s Sam Acevedo in 5:00 to finish as the runner-up.
Others on the podium for the Warriors were Gavin Thuente (120 lbs., 3rd place), Clayton Kuboushek (113 lbs., 5th place), Matthew Donovan (126 lbs., 5th place) and Gavin Feickert (190 lbs., 5th place).

Bearcat invite
Two of the Warriors’ five varsity wrestlers reach the finals Saturday at North Butler as South Winn took home seventh in the team standings with 62.5 points. Nashua-Plainfield was the top team of the day with 262 points over Lake Mills’ 225.5 points.
After topping the Upper Iowa Conference two days earlier, Schnuelle found himself in the semifinals at 175 pounds after a first round bye and a forfeit in the quarterfinal. He defeated Aiden Gelner of N-P by a 4-1 decision in the semifinal before falling by 21-6 tech fall to Class 1A No. 3 Creighton Kelly of West Hancock.
Lienau also took silver at 215 pounds. A first round bye and a fall over Calvin Rognes of Lake Mills in 3:47 had the SW junior in the semifinals against McCabe Gansen of North Butler/Clarkesville who lost by a 15-0 tech fall. Lienau the battled Reese Luedtke of West Hancock for the title before getting turned in 1:50.
Also scoring placement points for the Warriors were Thuente (120 lbs., 5th place) and Kolton Brummond (285 lbs., 5th place).
