They are headed to state.
The Decorah boys swim team will have one event representing it at this weekend’s state meet in Iowa City. The state meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15 at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.
Events are qualified on having the 24 fastest times across the state. There are no classes for swimming; all schools compete against one another.
As a team, the Vikes finished fourth at the Mason City district meet Saturday. Decorah put up 195 points. Cedar Falls claimed the district title with 491 points.
“We had another outstanding swim at the District Meet in Mason City. Each of three relays had significant time drops. In each of the individual events we saw season best performances as well,” noted coach Loran Storts.
The 200 free relay will dive into the state competition Saturday afternoon. Reid Kuehner, Dane Burns, Landon Humpal and Ian Giddings had the fourth fastest time at 1:32.25 at the district meet to qualify on time as the 23rd seed.
Decorah’s other two relays had fine finishes; however were unable to snag a state bid. The 200 medley relay of Max Grimstad, Humpal, Weston Cote and Kuehner touched the wall third Saturday in 1:45.30. In 3:26.03, the 400 free relay took fourth. Members combining their talents in the relay were Kuehner, Humpal, Grimstad and Burns.
Cote, Burns and Grimstad also took top 10 finishes in individual events. Cote posted a time of 56.73 seconds in the 100 butterfly to finish sixth while Burns was ninth in the 50 freestyle in 23.09 seconds. Grimstad came in 10th in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock at 52.27 seconds.
