Following weeks of road duals and tournaments, with the holiday break thrown in, the Class 1A No. 1 Decorah girls’ wrestling team put on a show, winning a pair of duals at home Thursday and winning the title at the Anamosa tournament Saturday.
Home double dual
Thursday’s double dual not was only celebration of two Viking wins over Crestwood and No. 4 Holmen (Wisconsin), but a quartet of athletes who picked up their 100th wins.
McKenzie Tollefson earned her 100th career win at 140 pounds, followed by Ana Simon at 145 pounds. The trifecta was complete when Lauren Luzum earned her 100th career victory at 155 pound. Kamryn Steines later earned her 100th career win at 190 pounds.
“The 100 Win Club is an admirable achievement for any wrestler. It’s a testament to years of hard work and preparation. It’s rare to have four wrestlers all reach this milestone all on the same night! I’m so proud of each one and the value they bring to our team. They are mentors and role models of dedication and sacrifice to this sport,” said coach Gene Adams. “When the girls took on No. 4 Holmen, the team looked confident and ready to take on a worthy Wisconsin team. The fans and home field advantage paid off as the Vikings as they rallied behind one another to earn a convincing win over Holmen.”
Decorah defeated Crestwood 70-12 with 10 of its 12 coming with pins, one other was a decision and one a forfeit. The Vikes bested Holmen 54-25, winning six matches by fall and two others by decision with two grapplers receiving forfeits.

Champions
With perhaps the most complete line-up this season 11 of Decorah’s 13 wrestlers placed in the top five on their respective brackets which led to the Vikings claiming the team title at Anamosa Saturday.
It was a 220.5-point day for the Vikings who topped the 14-team field. Cedar Rapids Prairie was second with 193 points with Class 1A No. 3 East Buchanan rounding out the top three with 174.
“The whole team did a wonderful job with a number of the younger girls excelling in their weight class. Notably, Simone Downing (125) and Bristol Parker (130), wrestled well above their bracket seed and both placed third. The two freshmen really stayed discipline in their positioning and technique all day,” said coach Adams.
Setting the tone first with the 100 pound title was Class 1A No. 1 Chloe Sheffield who pinned her way to the top of the podium. The senior first pinned Kaylin Goodwin of Linn-Mar in 1:22 in the quarterfinal, then threw Goodwin’s teammate, Class 2A No. 12 Brooke Walrath in 1:20 to advance to the finals. There it took the Viking 1:17 to put the shoulders of Elizabeth Burns of Cedar Rapids Prairie, who is ranked eighth in Class 2A, to the mat.
Improving her season record to 32-2, Ana Simon clinched the title at 145 pounds. Following a first-round bye, the Class 1A top-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds threw Bailey Hakert of Center Point-Urbana in 1:18 in the quarterfinal. Then it was time to turn Class 2A No. 8 Luisa Meade of Cedar Rapids Prairie in the semifinal. Again it was a first-period pin as Simon took the fall in 1:46. In the final, the title was secured by a 6-0 decision over East Buchanan’s Tayla Stiefel, who is currently ranked second in Class 1A.
Following suit with a first-round bye at 155 pounds, Lauren Luzum pinned her way past Katelyn Billings of Linn-Mar in 1:18. An 18-1 tech fall in the semifinal against Mt. Vernon’s Kaylee Kintzel gained Class 1A No. 2 Luzum entrance to the final against Marlee Peyton of Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Viking threw her opponent in just 31 seconds for the title.
At 235 pounds, Madysen Lippe also climbed to the top of the podium, using a trio of falls on her way. In the quarterfinal, Decorah’s Class 1A No. 9 wrestler pinned Lillian Nicolai of Pleasant Valley in 1:32. Moving on the semifinal against Reese Winslow, also of Pleasant Valley, Lippe got the fall in 2:25. It took 1:59 for Lippe to earn her title by fall over Kalie Davis of Belmont/Platteville(Wisconsin).
Class 1A No. 12 Kamryn Steines also reached the finals at 190 pounds, coming up short of the title. She pinned Dottie Korte of Mt. Vernon in 1:37 and Jenna Small of Center Point-Urbana in 1:10 before falling to Mt. Vernon’s top-ranked Libby Dix in 1:50.
“These five upper classmen (Sheffield, Simon, Luzum, Steines and Lippe) continue to compete well every week. They all have a special grit when it comes to competing and it is exciting to be around,” concluded coach Adams.
