Tourney champs
Battling through the tough 22-team Upper Iowa Invitational in Mason City Saturday, the Vikes saw eight of its 11 varsity wrestlers reach the finals to help the team win the title, over the Class 2A No. 3 Osage was the runner-up with 197.5 points.
“Saturday was a great day! This is the second consecutive tournament Decorah has placed first. More importantly, the wrestlers improved their standings heading into regionals, the state qualifying tournament,” said coach Gene Adams. “There were a number of individual instances of wrestlers overcoming adversity to accomplish what they did. I’m so proud of their effort and the momentum this provides heading into Regionals.”
Among those placing first were Sheffield (100), Simon (145) and Lippe (235).
Top-ranked Sheffield opened her day in the quarterfinals with a fall in 1:12 over Avery Williams of Clear Lake. Facing Class 1A No. 6 Mara Davis of Algona in the semifinals didn’t phase the Viking who took the match by a 14-3 major decision. In the battle of the top two wrestlers in Class 1A, Sheffield pulled out a 4-1 win over Osage’s Ainsley Hemann.
Simon, who is the top ranked wrestler at 145 pounds pinned her way to the top of the podium with all three of her matches wrapping up in the first period. The junior began her day with a 30 second fall over Mason City’s Charlene Prazak in the quarterfinal. A fall in 1:04 over Class 2A No. 4 Allie Van Der Molen in the semifinal sent Simon into the final against Class 1A No. 7 Jamie Jones of Sumner-Fredericksburg. There, Simon needed just 46 seconds to pick up the pin.
At 235 pounds, Lippe turned Addie Mikesell of Fort Dodge in 46 seconds in the quarterfinal, then put Montana Wilson of Emmetsburg on her back in 33 seconds. Battling Class 2A No. 8 Aniyah Smith in the final, Decorah’s own Class 1A No. 8 grappler survived to win 4-1.
Other Vikes in the finals included Adams (115), Simone Downing (125), Tollefson (140), Luzum (155) and Steines (190).
