Triple overtime game goes to Vikings, 53-51

Neither team wanted the season to end as the Decorah and Crestwood boys’ basketball teams faced off in the Substate 3 semifinal Thursday night in Cresco as the game wasn’t decided until the closing seconds of the third overtime.
In the end, it was the Vikings surviving the battle, 53-51.
Saint Ansgar ends TV’s run

It was a heck of a ride for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team, putting together a nine-game win streak and advancing all the way to the regional finals.
However, that ride came to an end Wednesday night in New Hampton as TV fell to No. 3 Saint Ansgar, 56-46. The Trojans were trying to earn their third trip to the state tournament.

It took all 32 minutes, but the South Winn boys’ basketball team was crowned the Class 1A District 6 champs Tuesday in Elkader surviving Ed-Co, 53-49. The fourth-quarter defense by the Warriors held the Vikings to just 2-of-13 field goals, to erase an eight-point deficit and secure the victory.
For the first time in 25 years the Warriors will make an appearance in the substate with that one game standing between them and a state tournament bid.
Vikings ready for third game with Cadets; substate Monday

Looking to start the postseason run with a hot start, the Decorah boys’ basketball team did just that, defeating Independence 69-46 Monday night at home in the Substate 3 quarterfinal.
Independence ends the season 8-14 overall. Decorah improves to 16-6 overall and faces Crestwood (13-6) in the substate semifinal today, Thursday, Feb. 25, in Cresco at 7 p.m.
Holland member of Luther College volleyball team

Waukon girls punch ticket to state

The Class 3A No. 14 Waukon girls’ basketball team punched the ticket to state.
After falling short of qualifying for the state tournament a year ago, falling to Beckman in the Class 3A regional championship, the Indians left no doubt who was the better team Saturday night. Waukon took on No. 6 Osage, the state runners-up from a year ago, besting the Green Devils, 60-37, in Waverly.
Three locals climb podium at Wells Fargo

Six wrestlers had the job of representing northeast Iowa last week at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Three of them returned home with hardware. Ranked fifth at 145 pounds in Class 2A, Jackson Rolfs of Decorah finished the tournament in fourth place, while fellow Viking Keenan Tyler earned seventh place. For the second straight season, South Winn’s Damon Meyer brought home sixth place at 220 pounds.
Warriors shock No. 10 Wapsie Valley

Since surviving a close first-round battle, the South Winn boys’ basketball team is looking to make more noise in the postseason after upsetting No. 10 Wapsie Valley Thursday. The Red and White Warriors put together a big fourth quarter to defeat WV, 61-53, in Fairbank.

The Decorah boys’ basketball team (15-6) tested the playoff waters, nearly defeating Class 3A No. 3 Monticello (19-0) Thursday night in Oelwein. In the end it was the Panthers who survived, 47-46.

The Decorah girls’ basketball team (12-9) fell to fifth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (21-2) in the regional playoffs Saturday, Feb. 20 on the road, ending its 2020-21 season in the Class 4A regional semifinals.

After 22 seasons, the 2019-20 Decorah boys’ basketball team won the Northeast Iowa Conference title and Tuesday night, the Vikings (15-5, 10-2 NEIC) proved they are the real deal with a 52-51 win over Crestwood (12-6, 8-4 NEIC) to earn back-to-back conference titles.

For the second time in a week a game between South Winn (15-6) and Clayton Ridge (11-10) was decided in overtime. Monday night, the Warriors claimed the Class 1A District 6 win, 64-56.
