South Winn grapplers earn pair of dual wins

The South Winn wrestling team kicked off the season Tuesday night on the road at the Crestwood duals.
The Warriors fell to the Cadets, 50-27, and rebounded to defeat Northwood-Kensett, 48-25, and Tripoli, 66-12.

Things looked good Tuesday night for the South Winn boys’ basketball team (1-0, 1-0 UIC) as the Warriors defeated Postville (0-1, 0-1 UIC) on the road, 60-20.
SW never trailed in the contest, taking a 23-7 lead after the first quarter. 

Second win for Lady Warriors

It was a battle all night for the South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-1, 1-1 UIC) after getting down to Postville (0-2, 0-2 UIC) Tuesday night. A solid second half proved to be the tipping point as the Warriors came away with the 47-40 win over the Pirates.

It was an exciting start to the 2021-22 season for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team with a win over New Hampton Monday night; however, the energy didn’t return for the squad’s second game Tuesday at Monona.

Fourth quarter dooms Vikes

After keeping pace with Prairie du Chien for three quarters, the final period was just too much for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (0-2, 0-0 NEIC) as the Vikes fell, 69-50, Tuesday at home.
The Vikings opened the contest with the momentum, leading 16-12 midway through the first period before the Blackhawks rallied to tie the score 16-all. 

Swimmers dive into a new season

To kick off the winter season, the Decorah boys swim team traveled the Cedar Valley to compete in a double dual meet against Linn-Mar and Cedar Falls Tuesday night.
The Vikings fell to Linn-Mar 127-43 and Cedar Falls 103-67.

Area gridders earn all-state honors

Ten area football players have been recognized by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association and the Iowa Football Coaches Association and named to the 2021 all-state football teams.
Decorah has five athletes named to the all-state teams, while Turkey Valley has four and South Winn has one.

Back on the mats; Grapplers looking for big wins

Sime and Meyer team up to run, educate and remember

Jennifer Sime and Tim Meyer are doing their part to educate others about Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).
Sime and Meyer recently ran in the Chicago Marathon as a part of Team Danny Did, a national foundation with a mission to prevent deaths caused by seizures.
They did so in memory of Brendan Numedahl, Sime’s son and Meyer’s close childhood friend.

The Warriors used a big second quarter to pull away from the Bearcats.

With five returning letter winners, there are lots of reasons to be ready for the season to start.
Leading the way is Shannon Quandahl, who has been with the program for six seasons. She is assisted by Tyler Wedemeier, Brigit Storhoff and Marcy Klein.

Talent abounds for Turkey Valley girls

The talent is there for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team for the 2021-22 season.
It will be a matter of putting it all together in the right combination.
Looking to continue to build on the strong program is Coach Carla Nymeyer, with a career record of 150-45. Joining her on the bench will be assistant coach Steve Hoffert.

Experience to pave the way for Trojans

The bench may be small, but the talent is there for the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team this winter.
The Trojans have just 10 members on the varsity squad, with two seniors and four juniors that saw a lot of time of the floor last season.
Leading the team this season is John Izer who takes over for Chris Sullivan who coached the squad for 10 years. However, Izer is not a new face on the bench as he has been a volunteer assistant for many years. Joining him on the bench will be assistant Levi Izer, along with volunteer coach Ethan Leibold.

Decorah boys swim team built on talent

Graduating just two seniors, the Decorah swimmers have youth and experience on their side this season.
With three seniors this season, the squad returns 12 letter winners and look to be poised to do big things in the water this season.
Leading the squad is Head Coach Laura Storlie, who is starting her sixth season with the Vikings. Joining Storlie poolside as her assistant will be Decorah alum Maddie Putnam.

New coach in charge of South Winn boys

There’s a new coach in charge of the South Winn boys’ basketball team. And some new players will get the chance to make a name for themselves as a part of the Warrior basketball team.
After two years as an assistant coach in the program, Derek Taylor takes over as the head man. He’ll be looking to put together a team with four returning letter winners and a host of young hopefuls.
Taylor will be assisted by Mitch Herold.

The wrestling room at South Winn will be buzzing this winter — both from the number of athletes and from the talent they possess.
With 11 returning letter winners and a host of young grapplers ready to shine in varsity competition, it will be a busy and productive season for the Warriors.
Leading the talented squad is Head Coach Jake Elsbernd. He has been with the team for 10 season. This year, he will be assisted by Jason Schmelzer, Ethan Adams, Kenny Mikota, Dakota Gray and Jake Everts.
