Three bowlers will represent the Decorah bowling program at state Wednesday, Feb. 23, after finishing in the top eight at Tuesday’s state qualifying meet at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids. Preparing for the big stage at Maple Lanes in Waterloo are Grace Gerleman, Rebecca Bruening and Will Marx.

Two Decorah wrestlers advanced from the Class 2A District meet at New Hampton and Turkey Valley’s (NH-TV) Marcus Herold, while two Warriors moved on from their Class 1A District meet at Denver.

Vikes earn share of NEIC title

A 44-34 win handed the Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-6, 9-1 NEIC) a share of the Northeast Iowa Conference title. The Viking victory snaps a 26-game losing streak to Class 4A No. 9 Waverly-Shell Rock (16-5, 9-1 NEIC) that dates back to January 2010 and gives Decorah its first NEIC title since 2007.

A strong second half propelled the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (16-6) to a win Thursday night over Kee High in the first round of the Class 1A girls’ playoffs.
The Hawks end the season 7-15. Turkey Valley advances to face Central Elkader (18-4) in the regional semifinal Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., in Elkader. The Warriors narrowly defeated Tripoli, 57-51, in the first round.

Chamberlain ends career at state

Senior Drew Chamberlain was the lone representative of the Decorah boys’ swim team at the state meet Friday and Saturday. Chamberlain wrapped up his high school career in the University of Iowa pool in Iowa City, scoring five points for the Vikes in his two events.

Mitchell records 300th career dual meet victory at Luther

Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, will always be a special date for Luther College wrestling coach Dave Mitchell. Following a hard-fought 18-13 victory over the University of Dubuque, Coach Mitchell had secured his 300th career dual meet victory and joined legendary Hall of Fame coaches Al Baxter (376-119-5) of Buena Vista University and Jim Miller 9413-37-2) of Wartburg College, as the only head coaches to accomplish this feat while coaching in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and rebranded as the American Rivers Conference on Aug. 9, 2018.

It was a nail biter Monday night for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (15-6, 12-4 UIC) as the Trojans traveled to Riceville (19-2) for make-up game, surviving Wildcats 37-34 for the victory.

Whitsitt breaks Duwe’s three-point record

Junior Bryar Duwe’s record six treys in a game was short-lived as Yazmeen Whitsitt broke the 10-day old record Monday when the Decorah girls’ basketball team (13-6, 8-1 NEIC) played at Charles City (0-18, 0-9 NEIC). The Vikings overpowered the Comets, 69-39.

The South Winn wrestling team will have five wrestlers looking to continue the dream of a state title Saturday after each finished in the top two of their weight class at the Class 1A Sectional 4 Saturday at Clarksville.
Tony Greve (220) won a sectional title, while Aiden Feickert (106), Ethan Maldonado (132), Collin Holm (138) and Logan Hageman (195) earned spots as the runners-up to all advance to the district meet Saturday, Feb. 12, at Denver, at 11 a.m. Each will have the goal of finishing in the top two at districts to earn a spot at the state meet.

Competing at the sectional meet Saturday in Cresco, the Vikings had five matmen finish either first or second at their weight, earning a ticket to the district meet Saturday, Feb. 12, in New Hampton.
