Decorah girls put the ball in the net twice for win

After playing four games in the last four days, plus playing in heat and humidity for the first time, the toll had been taken on the Decorah girls’ soccer team. However, mental toughness and endurance by the Vikes put together a late charge for the 2-0 win over North Fayette Valley in Elgin Monday night.

Boys pull wind out from under Eagles

The Decorah boys’ soccer team put a mark back in the win column Monday after their win streak was broken over the weekend in Waverly. The Vikes (9-3) put the ball in goal twice in the first half and three times in the second to defeat Clayton Ridge (6-6) in Guttenberg, 5-1.

Decorah girls pull out slim 4-3 win over Independence

“What’s up with the weather? It finally warms up and what do we get? 35 mph winds and 89 degrees. Players tried to adapt but it was tough,” pointed out Decorah girls’ tennis coach Larry Berland.
However, Decorah found what it took to pull out a slim 4-3 victory on the Independence courts Monday. Leading 4-2 after singles, Decorah only needed one victory in doubles to win the match. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles played well but just could not come up with a winning formula. Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles team of Annalise Skrade and Mara Holland had fallen behind 0-5 in their eight-game pro-set. 

Warrior, Trojan boys finished third, fourth in UIC

The 2022 Upper Iowa Conference boys’ meet was a wind-blown affair with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph coupled with gusts near 50 mph at times. It made the meet a matter of survival as the UIC traversed the Tri-City golf course near Luana received nearly three inches of rain the day before as well.
South Winn and Turkey Valley finished together as the teams battled the elements. The Warriors ended the day with 407 strokes, three ahead of the Trojans.

Vikings compete in NEIC tourney

Decorah made the short trek to the Waukon Golf and Country Club Monday to compete in the annual Northeast Iowa Conference tournament, finishing fifth.
New Hampton and Waverly-Shell Rock ran away with the championship tying at 406. Charles City came in third with 494, followed by Crestwood with 510. The Vikes finished the day with 550 and Waukon had no team score.

Best in the area again as Vikes sweep NEIC titles

Once again the Decorah track and field teams dominated at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, this time at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday.
The girls picked up their 17th NEIC crown in a row. Winning nine events and taking second in five, Decorah racked up 160.50 points, while New Hampton finished second with 142.
The boys won their sixth title in a row by scoring 162 points, edging out Waverly-Shell Rock who garnered 158.50 points. The Vikings won nine of the 19 events on the way to the victory.

SW boys claim UIC crown second year in a row

It was a close one.
But it makes it two years in a row for the South Winn boys track and field team claiming the Upper Iowa Conference title, held Thursday in Postville.
The Warrior boys won the team title with 132 points, while North Fayette Valley finished second with 130. Turkey Valley garnered 87 points to finished fifth.
Central Elkader was crowned the girls’ champion with 135, ahead of NFV with 120 and Turkey Valley’s 111 points. South Winn ended the night with 85 points in fifth place.

Finally getting the weather to cooperate, the Decorah boys’ tennis team ended the dual portion of the season on a positive note, winning 2-of-3 matches last week.

Everything is coming together at the right time for the South Winn golf teams as their scores continue to lower with personal best tallies peaking just before the postseason. In a make-up meet from earlier this season, the Warriors played at North Fayette Valley with Central Elkader Thursday, then hosted Clayton Ridge Friday.

Close finish again for Trojan linksters

With the rain holding off the Turkey Valley boys’ golf team had a picture-perfect night for a competition Thursday as the Trojans lost by two strokes 204 to 202 to West Central. It was a boys’ only meet as the Blue Devils does not field a girls team.
Friday, the Trojans were back in action in the regular season finale at Cresco.

It was a total team effort given by the Decorah boys’ soccer team (8-3) as they played a trio of games at Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday with the Vikes going 2-1.
“We played well the whole day and are really happy with the guys’ effort. We tried to get a bunch of guys some time, and make this day about a total team effort. With another four games in the next eight days, we’ll learn from it what we can and keep plugging away at the regular season games,” said Coach Julie Simiele.

Stowe breaks nearly 100-year-old record

A record that has stood since 1929 finally was broken Monday as Decorah senior sprinter Haywood Stowe flew down the track in the 100-meter dash in 11.11 seconds.
“It has been a goal of Haywood’s, so it was great to see the 1929 record finally go down. We had many outstanding efforts from our athletes as we head into conference and state qualifying meets,” said Coach Joel Rollinger.

Local teams shine at South Winn invite

The South Winn track teams hosted the Warrior Invite Monday night.
The boys posted 165 points for the win, with Turkey Valley claiming second with 115 points. The Decorah junior varsity squad was also on the track finishing with 43 points in fifth place.
In the girls’ team race, it was Crestwood taking the top spot with 137 points. The Trojan girls also took the runner-up spot with 110 points, while Decorah was third with 87, followed by South Winn with 81.

Decorah girls’ tennis dominates conference tourney

The Decorah girl’s tennis team competed in the North Central Tennis Conference Tournament at the Luther College courts Monday, with Charles City, Clear Lake, Decorah, Osage and Waverly-Shell Rock competing. A day later, the Vikings were back on the court at Waverly-Shell Rock and returned home with a 6-3 win.

The Decorah boys’ soccer team (6-2) put another notch in the win column Monday as the Vikes shut out Dubuque Wahlert (3-6) at home 3-0.
Leading scoring for the Vikes in the first minute of play was senior Ryan Johanningmeier on an unassisted goal.

The Turkey Valley golf teams were left with a skeleton squad due to a myriad of reasons when they played South Winn at the South Winn Golf and Country Club near Calmar in a rescheduled meet from earlier in the season Tuesday. This allowed the Warrior boys the opportunity to come through with a win 188 to 214, while the SW girls were victorious 238 to 260.
