Trojans finish third in UIC

AA lot has transpired for the Turkey Valley Trojan volleyball team in the past week or so.
The Trojans and co-head coaches Ashley Walz and Tammy Vrzak helped guide their Trojans to a third-place finish in the Upper Iowa Conference standings after finishing off the league portion of their slate with a three-set sweep over West Central and a win in four at MFL MarMac.
This is the second year in a row that the Trojans have gone 6-2 in league play and finished third in the league standings.

Dons run roughshod over Trojans

No matter how the 17-point tiebreaker shakes out – Turkey Valley needs to win Friday night to have a chance to secure a ninth game this fall and a coveted playoff berth.
The Trojan football team was a heavy underdog at Gilbertville last week against No. 4 Don Bosco (7-0 5-0). The Dons proved that prediction right as they rolled past coach Mark Scott’s squad to post a 62-0 shutout victory in 8-Man, District 3 play.
Don Bosco rolled up 370 yards of rushing in the contest and led 35-0 after one quarter of play.
“We need to improve our tackling,” said coach Scott.

Zilka champion; Vikes sweep titles at SW invite

In one of the final regular season meets of the season hosted by the South Winn cross country team, squads from northeast Iowa, including Decorah and Turkey Valley, converged on the picturesque South Winn Golf and Country Club Tuesday night.
The Decorah boys came close to a perfect score with an 18 to win the team title. The host Warriors finished the night with 110 points in fourth.
In the girls’ race the Lady Vikes came home with the title, tallying 38 points while South Winn posted 67 to earn third.

No. 5 Decorah tames W-SR, 28-7

The Viking football team (6-0, 2-0) showcased why they are ranked fifth in Class 4A by the Cedar Rapids Gazette Friday night, running over Waverly-Shell Rock (3-3, 1-1) by scoring in every frame to win 28-7.

Warriors dig out wins over MFL MM, Central

South Winn volleyball fans have been seeing a lot of pink lately…and wins. The Warriors (17-10, 4-1 UIC) have won the last 10 matches and 17 of the last 20 including last Thursday’s Dig Pink Night at home against MFL MarMac and Tuesday’s sweep at Central Elkader’s Dig Pink Night.

Warriors fall in OT to Huskies

After a scoreless fourth quarter, it took overtime to decide Friday’s game between the South Winn football team (2-4, 2-2) and district leader Nashua-Plainfield (5-1, 4-0) in Calmar. The Warriors put up a fight but fell to the Huskies 27-21.

Decorah harriers finish second at Epworth

Season and personal best records were last Thursday at Epworth as the Decorah boys and girls cross country teams took the course.
Both squads finished second overall at the large meet.

Seventh for Decorah at Marcussin Invite

The pool was busy Saturday at the 46th annual Marcussen Invite, held in Cedar Falls.
The Decorah girls swim and dive team posted 173 points, good for seventh. Cedar Falls was the team champion, scoring 536 points.

Trojans rout Regents in homecoming blowout

The Turkey Valley Trojans routed second-year program Waterloo Christian (2-4, 1-3) in their homecoming game in Jackson Junction by a score of 62-26 to remain alive for a postseason berth in 8-Man, District 3.

Goeke, Drucker, Kreitzer battle for top pigskin prize

New faces took the top three spots in week four of the Pigskin Picks Football Contest.
Four individuals missed just one game, three of them were just one away from the first tiebreaker of the most points scored by a single team at 63. Turkey Valley scored the single most points in a game with 62. So it came down to the second tiebreaker, decided by the most total points of a single game, which was 88 between the Trojans and Waterloo Christian.

Decorah spikers win streak snapped at WD

The Decorah volleyball team (15-9, 2-2 NEIC) was on a five-match win streak entering its final battle Saturday at the Western Dubuque tournament.
The Vikings entered their final NEIC match second against the league leader Charles City Tuesday night to finish third in the conference.

Momentum was built Saturday for the South Winn volleyball team (15-10, 3-1 UIC) as the Warriors went undefeated and claimed the title at the annual Decorah tournament. The host Vikings (12-7, 3-1 NEIC) went 3-3 on the day.

The Turkey Valley gym was rocking Tuesday night as the Trojans (10-11, 4-2 UIC) hosted South Winn volleyball team (15-10, 3-1 UIC). The Warriors earned the 3-1 win in Jackson Junction, making it eight wins in a row to move into second place in the Upper Iowa Conference.

The Decorah football team (5-0, 1-0) demonstrated their skills Friday night as they took on Mason City. The Vikings, who remain the top passing and rushing team in the district, ran over Mason City’s Riverhawks, who are second in passing and third in rushing touchdowns. The Viking power was there all night consuming the grid iron and the 41-7 victory.

Thompson wins week three

There were numerous close finishes to games in week three of the Pigskin Picks football contest.
When all 40 entries were scored, no perfect entries remained. The best was two missed games by five different individuals with Elaine Thompson of Decorah scoring the win by the first tiebreaker. The most points scored by a single team was 65 by Riceville, which was also Thompson’s guess.

Warrior offense produces 42 points in victory

A defensive effort that allowed just one touchdown spurred the South Winn football team (2-3, 2-1) to a 42-7 victory on the road over AGWSR (1-4, 1-3) Friday night.
“We had a great first half of football as we were able to put up a 35-0 lead going into halftime. Our defensive line answered the challenge this week and led the way to a total of eight tackles for loss and four quarterback sacks. Our defensive line was led by three seniors — Shayde Wermers, Tristen Bodensteiner and Brennan Franzen,” noted Coach Jason Ohrt. “Offensively, we were able to have great production again in the run game, but also connected on several big pass plays as well.”
