NICC Sports Shooting picks up second win

The Northeast Iowa Community College Cougar Sports Shooting team defeated Kirkwood Community College for its second win of the new season, 473-295, on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Turkey Valley Trap Range.

Athletic Hall of Fame inductees to be honored

Luther College Athletic Director Renae Hartl announced the incoming members of the 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame class.
Kirk Neubauer (’76), Christina  (Gaard) Baumgart (’07), Kelsey (Kittleson) Millonig (‘12), Kyle Pearson (‘07), Kyle Schroeder (‘07), Jenarah Tekippe (‘01), Jen (Shinborni) Giordano (‘02), Tony Campbell (‘97), Donald Hrodey (‘72), James Lantz (‘72) and Robert Miller (‘72) will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame during a short ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Center for Faith and Life on Luther’s campus. 

Trojans in good district position

The Turkey Valley (4-1, 3-0) is in the driver’s seat in the district after defeating Clarksville (3-3, 1-2) Friday night on the road, 44-34.
The Trojans currently are tied with Tripoli for the top spot with both undefeated in district play.
“This was a good road win. Clarksville has a very good chance of being a playoff team. Offensively we moved the ball consistently the entire game. Two big penalties killed two drives and a fumble killed the only other drive we didn’t score on. Defensively we ran to the ball all night. Oliver Schmitt had a great game on offense and also on defense, sealing the victory with a late interception,” said Coach Mark Scott.

SW leads UIC with undefeated mark

The South Winn Warrior volleyball team (9-16, 5-0 UIC) maintained their undefeated record in conference play with a sweep at Postville on Thursday evening, 3-0. 
The Warriors dominated the first two sets winning 25-10 and 25-12, but Postville didn’t go down without a fight as they played the Warriors 21-21 in the third set until South Winn went on a 4-0 run to finish out the match, 25-21.
“I thought we came out strong and did a lot of good things early to set the tone. We weren’t as sharp in our passing game, but our girls competed and finished out a tough third set when we faced some adversity,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Krivachek, 400 free take bronze

The pool was busy Saturday at the 44th annual Marcussen Invite, held in Cedar Falls.
The Decorah swim and dive team posted 175.5 points, good for fifth place out of 10 teams. Cedar Falls was the team champion, scoring 510 points.
Decorah had two events win the bronze medal. Brinley Krivachek had a great day on the one-meter diving board. The senior scored 403.75 points to earn third place.
The 400-yard freestyle relay was shining as well with a time of 3:57.33. Members of the bronze-medal team were Paige Werner, Katerina Kovarik, Julia Alberts and Maeley Nefzger. That same quartet took fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.27.

Western Dubuque overpowers Vikings, 38-22

Following a late score in the district opener at Mason City a week earlier, the Decorah football team (2-4, 0-2) was looking to get back on track as the Vikes hosted Western Dubuque-Epworth (4-2, 2-0) Friday night. However, the Vikings’ scoring opportunities were limited in the first half, allowing the Bobcats to roll up the win 38-22.

Schmitt has perfect week two

Kevin Schmitt of Fort Atkinson scored the win in week two of the Pigskin Picks football contest, having missed none of the 12 games.
Second place went to Decorah’s Sue Roby with one game missed and she was two away from the first tie-breaker with a guess of 63. Turkey Valley scored the most points for the week with 61. Ryan Busta of Fort Atkinson took third place, also missing one game and predicted the highest score of one game at 64.
Commonly missed games included Mason City over Decorah, Mabel-Canton defeating Kingsland and Iowa State falling to Baylor.

Vikings race well at Epworth

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ cross country teams took their talents to Epworth Thursday, returning home with fifth and sixth place finishes respectively in the field.

The Class 3A No. 18 Viking men tallied 149 points to take fifth place as Class 4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Kennedy secured the top spot in the team standings with 42. Decorah had an average time of 18:20.7 with a spread of 46.4 seconds.
At the line first for the Vikes was junior Henry Weis in 17:58.0, taking 20th overall. Grant Zilka stopped the clock at 18:08.2 to claim 24th, while Cade Olson was 27th in 18:12.2. In 18:40.2, Davis Coppola took 38th place with Jake Magner capping off the team score in 40th in 18:44.4. 

SW falls to No. 10 Wapsie Valley

The South Winn football team knew it faced a tough task Friday night, battling Class A No. 10 Wapsie Valley (4-2) at home.
The home Warriors put up a fight but fell to the Gold and Black Warriors 48-24.
“Defensively we had a hard time making run fits off tackle and they hurt us with some big runs. Offensively, we had our chances and were able to establish our own running attack,” said SW coach Jason Ohrt. “Parker Timp left everything on the field carrying the ball 38 times for 151 yards and making 10.5 tackles on defense. Our special teams’ units also played well, as Keagen Streeter made all four of his kicks and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.”

Decorah spikers stagger at WD tourney

The Class 4A No. 11 Decorah volleyball team (18-6, 2-2 NEIC) couldn’t get the momentum on its side Saturday at the tournament at Western Dubuque, ending the day 1-3.
The day started for the Vikings with a 2-0 win over Davenport North (3-11) by set scores of 21-12 and 21-9. Moving on to face the hosts, Class 4A No. 4 Western Dubuque (17-3), Decorah pushed the match to three sets. Ultimately the Vikings dropped the match 21-18, 10-21 and 5-15. It was another three-set match versus West Branch (12-11) in game three with Decorah falling 17-21, 21-17 and 13-15. The day ended versus Class 2A No. 3 Wapsie Valley (34-2) in two sets. Scores of the sets were 13-21 and 14-21.

Trojans tripped up by Eagles

Taking their game on the road, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (8-13, 3-1 UIC) battled Clayton Ridge Thursday and other tough teams at a tournament at Northeast Gooselake Saturday.
In the conference match versus the Clayton Ridge Eagles the Trojans battled through four tough sets, eventually falling by set scores of 22-25, 25-23, 24-26 and 21-25. 

Happy homecoming; Trojans blow past Janesville

It was the quite an offensive show for the Turkey Valley football team (3-1, 2-0) Friday night for homecoming as the Trojans defeated Janesville (1-5, 0-3), 61-8.
“This was a good homecoming win as the players executed well in all phases of the game. Playing the major portion of the first half on our side of the field allowed us to score quickly. The defense was aggressive and ran to the ball very well. We ran 23 offensive plays in the first half to score 55 points. It was a good game to allow the younger players to play on Homecoming night,” said Coach Mark Scott.

Hein wins week one

Week one of the Pigskin Picks football contest is in the books.
Taking first place is Steven Hein of Calmar. He missed just one game to claim the top prize.
Earning second place was Kyle Christen of Cedar Rapids. He missed two games and guessed 61 as the highest score of any one team. Turkey Valley and Wartburg both scored 62 in their games. In third was Davis Luhman of Decorah. He also missed two games and was four away from the first tie-breaker with a guess of 58 as the highest score of any one game.

Vikes claim crown at own tourney

Momentum continued to build Saturday for the No. 11 Decorah volleyball team as the Vikings hosted their own tournament.
The Vikes (16-3, 1-2 NEIC) finished 6-0 for the day for the win.
South Winn (7-16, 3-0 UIC) also competed in the nine-team tournament, winning two contests.

Warrior volleyball still perfect in UIC

It was another busy week on the court for the South Winn volleyball team (7-16, 3-0 UIC) as the Warriors picked up their third conference win over Kee Thursday and competed at the annual Decorah tournament Saturday.
South Winn moved to 3-0 in UIC play with the three-set sweep over Kee High (0-10, 0-1 UIC) Thursday in Lansing. 
A big service run by Abby Wagner in the opening set got the momentum on the Warrior side early and it stayed with them the entire evening as South Winn won by set scores of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-13.

It wasn’t how South Winn students and fans wanted to celebrate homecoming.
The Warrior football team (2-3, 2-2) hosted district-leader North Linn (4-1, 4-0) Friday night, falling 42-7.
“We knew going in we were facing a tough challenge. North Linn has a solid veteran group of kids, and they played a great game,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “We moved the ball well at times, but credit North Linn’s defense as they limited our explosive plays for most of the night. I thought our kids did a nice job of gathering themselves at halftime as we came out and played a much better second half.”

Vikings tread rough waters

The Decorah girls’ swim and dive team faced stiff competition from some larger schools Saturday at the Cougar Invite hosted by Cedar Rapids Kennedy, finishing 10th with 75 points. Iowa City West posted 464 for the team title.

The Turkey Valley volleyball team (7-12 1-0 UIC) were unable to record a win at the Dunkerton tournament Saturday facing Ankeny Christian (20-1), Waterloo Christian (10-11) and Aplington-Parkersburg (15-11).
