Vikings are best of NCSC…for fifth straight season

Saturday marked the fifth North Central Swim Conference title in a row for the Decorah boys’ swim team. The Vikes traveled to Cedar Rapids to compete in the championships where they tallied 479 points, which included 11 top-three placings. Vinton-Shellsburg was a distant second with 357 points.
“I am so proud of the way the boys swam — from our freshman scoring points to the depth of our relays — this was truly a team win for the Vikings. For the season, we had a record of 30-7,” said Coach Loran Storts.
Decorah had one individual champion winning two events. Dom Bigalk claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:56.48 and touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.60.
Decorah overwhelms NH, 70-36

Not even the weather could stop the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (16-2, 8-0 NEIC) as the Vikings defeated New Hampton (7-10, 2-6 NEIC) at home Friday, 70-36.
Decorah created a large gap in the scoring in the first with a 24-10 advantage that grew to 49-25 by halftime. Solid Viking defense and opportunities scoring pushed Decorah over the top in the second half as the Vikes outscored the Chickasaws 23-11 for the win.
Vikes on four-game win streak

The Decorah boys’ basketball team is on roll, this time the Vikes (10-5, 5-3 NEIC) bested New Hampton (7-10, 3-5 NEIC) in NEIC action Friday night, 88-59.
Playing at home, Decorah took control early on. The Vikes went up 12-6 midway through the first period and led 22-18 at the end of the quarter. It remained a close battle throughout the second period, with Decorah up 38-35 at the half. Decorah continued to play tough going up by 10 at the end of the third, 55-45. The fourth quarter was when the Vikes put the game away, scoring 33 points.
Warriors crown two UIC champs, finish third

Despite graduating a lot of wrestlers from last year’s Upper Iowa Conference championship team, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team competed well Thursday at the individual tournament. The Warriors finished third with 171 points, behind MFL MarMac who had 220 points and North Fayette Valley with 218.
In addition, two Warrior matmen claimed titles with two others finishing second.
“I thought we wrestled well as we were able to get four wrestlers into the finals,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd. “We are still young, but I loved our effort and competitive spirit. We are getting healthier and our guys are still making some nice improvements. I think we are starting to peak and will have two weeks to get some work in before we step on the mat at the district tournament.”
Four Vikings finish runner-up

Decorah took on some difficult competition in the Northeast Iowa Conference wrestling tournament in Waukon Saturday, finishing fifth as a team with 117.5 points, despite having four Vikes in the finals.
Class 3A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock picked up the team title with 314.5 points, well ahead of second-place Crestwood who garnered 197 points. New Hampton-Turkey Valley finished third with 178 points.
Fourth-quarter lifts Warriors over NFV, 54-49

It was a big comeback in the fourth quarter Friday night as the South Winn boys’ basketball team (10-6, 9-3 UIC) defeated North Fayette Valley (10-6, 9-4 UIC) in West Union, 54-49.
The TigerHawks took the early lead over the Warriors 14-10 following the first eight minutes of action and opened the margin to 26-17 by halftime. As South Winn worked to close the gap, NFV maintained a comfortable advantage through the third to lead, 42-30, with one quarter remaining. That is when the Warriors went to work on both ends of the floor, outscoring the home team 24-7 and bring home the win, closing the game on a 20-5 run in the last five minutes.
SW girls fall to TigerHawks

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-12, 5-8 UIC) fell behind early Friday night and never recovered, losing to North Fayette Valley (11-5, 10-3 UIC) in West Union, 58-21.
Things didn’t look good from the beginning, with the Warriors scoring just four points in the first eight minutes to trail 15-4 after the first quarter. The TigerHawks continued to plow ahead in the second quarter. At the halftime break, the TigerHawks led, 37-12. The Warriors scored eight points in the third frame and were held to one in the final period.

Earlier this week it was a tale of two totally different ball games for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (13-5, 12-2 UIC) as they narrowly defeated non-conference foe Crestwood and bested West Central.

It was a busy start to the week as the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (9-7, 7-5 UIC) played back-to-back nights facing Crestwood on the road Monday and recognizing its seniors Tuesday at home against West Central.
South Winn grapplers prep for UIC tourney

The South Winn wrestling team had a busy end to the regular season with a triangular at Central Springs Tuesday, going 1-1 for the night. The Warriors defeated North Butler-Clarksville 47-33 and fell to the host 51-21.
Against North Butler-Clarksville, the Warriors picked up five wins and received three forfeits. At 106 pounds, Jamison Zweibahmer picked up a fall over Weston Miller in 2:47. Landen Schnuelle turned Stroker Koop in 1:45 for the fall at 138 pounds and Lukas Weiss pinned Ryland Pitzenberger in 1:03 at 145 pounds. By an 18-1 tech fall, Kyle Kuboushek was the winner at 152 pounds over Samuel Martinez-Macias and Ray Lienau threw Weston Jensen at 220 pounds in 2:38. Receiving forfeits for South Winn were Aiden Feickert (113), Kaden Bullerman (160) and Parker Timp (195).

After dropping a close non-conference game to New Hampton Monday, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (9-6, 8-3 UIC) got back on track Tuesday with a win over Kee High at home.

There were highs and lows earlier this week for the South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-11, 5-7 UIC) with a suffocating loss to Class 3A New Hampton Monday and a Senior Night win over Kee High Tuesday.
Duwe breaks all-time girls’ scoring record

Stepping out of conference play, the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team extended its win streak to eight Tuesday night. The Vikes (15-2, 7-0 NEIC) traveled to Denver (6-11) and brought home a 71-54 victory. In addition, senior Bryar Duwe topped the girls’ basketball all-time scoring record of 1,310 points.
Decorah opened the night with a 25-14 lead first quarter advantage. In the second period, the Cyclones picked up some offensive momentum and narrowed the Vikes’ lead to 38-32 at the break. The Red and Blue did just enough in the second half to maintain their lead, outscoring the home team 13-10 in the third to carry a 51-42 lead into the final period. Both squads were on fire in the fourth, nearly matching point-for-point, but Decorah’s lead lifted the Vikings over Denver in the end.

Viking girls second, SW seventh at Winter tourney

Wrestlers from 16 schools took the mats for perhaps the final time in the regular season Saturday at the Decorah winter tournament. Among them were the hosts Lady Vikes who finished second with 236 points, five points behind Waverly-Shell Rock who tallied 241. The South Winn girls’ wrestling team also took part in the tournament and finished with 84 points in seventh place.

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team had a good finish to the dual season with a 45-18 win over Charles City Friday night on the road.
The Vikes picked up six wins and two forfeits for the night.
Kaitlyn Bjork started the pins at 115 pounds by throwing Tegan Cavanaugh in 5:01. At 130 pounds, Ashley Bjork threw Kylie Blunt in 47 seconds. In 1:28, Mairi Sessions pinned Nyssa Salinas at 155 pounds followed by Kamryn Steines turning Savannah Baldus in 1:13 for the fall at 170 pounds. Moving up a weight class, Naomi Simon threw Leah Stewart in 1:27 at 190 pounds.
Receiving forfeits were Chloe Sheffield (105) and Rorie Weidow (120).
Four solid quarters for SW girls

It all came together Friday night at home for the South Winn girls’ basketball team as the Warriors (4-10, 4-7 UIC) defeated West Central (4-10, 2-8 UIC), 65-27.
A first quarter 12-3 lead set the stage for the big win for the Warriors. The gap opened to 30-11 by halftime as South Winn continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Blue Devils 35-17.
Two Warriors were in double figures with junior Josie Tieskoetter setting the pace with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Karissa Wenthold put up 12 points to go with three steals. Freshman Ella Theis just missed the double-digit mark with nine points, along with six rebounds.
Trio of events bring home silver

The Decorah boys’ swim team competed in a triangular meet Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Linn-Mar. The Vikes fell to Linn-Mar, 117-51, and to Iowa City City High, 104-62.
Decorah had three events finish second overall. The 200 medley relay started things strong. Isaac Knaack, Mason Cote, Simon Kutz and Dylan Hogan had a time of 1:45.57.
Knaack had a great time in the 50 freestyle, finishing second in 22.78 seconds, while Kutz posted a time of 59.53 seconds in the 100 butterfly for runner-up.
The 200 free relay earned the bronze. Quinn Baumann, Knaack, Kutz and Hogan touched the wall in 1:33.66.
Keglers win dogfight at Forest City

Keeping the perfect season in sights, Friday’s match between the Decorah boys’ bowling team and Forest City came down to less than 100 pins. When the final ball was rolled down the lane it was the Vikes coming out on top 2,676 to 2,567.
Off to a shaky start in the individual shooting, Decorah began with a 1,783 as a team and needed big baker games to secure the win. Baker games for the varsity boys were 179, 156, 198, 169 and 191. Anchoring the bakers was senior Easton Luzum.

Keeping its Northeast Iowa Conference record perfect, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-2, 7-0 NEIC) downed Crestwood (6-9, 1-6 NEIC) on the road, 72-34, Friday night.
The Vikes came out on fire with a 19-12 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. In the second period, Decorah more than doubled its lead by outscoring the Cadets 19-5 for a 38-17 lead at the break. It was another 19-point period in the third for the visitors for a 57-28 gap with eight minutes left to play.
