Decorah wins big over Comets

Closing out a three-game week, the Decorah boys’ soccer team (3-1) picked up a convincing 7-0 win on the road over Charles City (1-7) Friday night.
The Vikings score two goals in the first half and padded its lead with five more in the second. In all, Decorah had 14 shots on goal with Aiden Burroughs putting two balls in goal for Decorah with Jake Magner, Lincoln Bishop, Benson Newhouse, Isaac Knaack and Franklin Lesmeister each contributing one apiece.
Trojans bring home two golds

Getting on the track at New Hampton, the Turkey Valley girls and boys track teams posted another day of solid gains Thursday.
The girls finished with 36 points, garnering one gold. The boys’ team standings were unavailable at press time, but the Trojans also collected one title.
Experience leading the way for Viking netters

With the season already under way, it is clear that the experience of the Decorah girls tennis team will be the key to successful run in the 2023 postseason with the Vikes already 4-2 in duals.
Taking the reins for her inaugural season is Amanda Huinker, who is just the second coach in the program’s history, with assistants Reg Laursen, Phil Yee, Kristy Schilling and Annika Krieg.
Viking boys pick up two wins

After opening the season with a tough loss, the Decorah boys soccer team (2-1) rebounded with back-to-back wins earlier this week defeating Independence (1-1) at home 4-0 Monday and Postville (1-4) on the road Tuesday, 4-2.
In all, Decorah had 28 shots on goal with 14 shots on target and six corner kicks Monday night. Playing on the home pitch Monday, Vinicio Ortiz, Jimmy Valdez, Will Larson and Lincoln Bishop all scored goals for the Vikes with assists by Jake Magner, Easton Luzum and Brady Benzing. Meanwhile Caleb Myer had six saves in the goal.
Vikes take Relays title; SW fifth

It was a picture-perfect night on the oval Monday as the Decorah boys track team hosted the Decorah relays. The Vikes won the day with 164 points. Waukon was a distant second with 115. South Winn came in fifth with 62.
The home squad
Decorah picked up five victories on the night. Highlighting the meet was a new school record in the long jump by Kaiden Quandahl at 22 feet 3 inches.
Two other individual won gold in hurdle events. Dakota Johnson broke the tape in the 110-high hurdles in 15.95 seconds, while Ashton Saltou won the 400-meter hurdle event in 1:00.53.
Mustangs too much for Decorah girls

Finally getting to play at home, the Decorah girls soccer team (1-3) fell to Independence (2-0) at home Monday night, 4-0.
The Vikes were behind 2-0 at halftime and couldn’t swing the momentum in their favor in the second half as the Mustangs scored two more times in the second half.
Decorah had just two shots on goal with one coming from Gabrielle Dixon and the other Grace Neal. Goalie Mya Redenius recorded 10 saves.
Pitch fever; record number set to compete

The foundation is set for the Decorah girls soccer team with 40 athletes competing for a spot on the pitch as the 2023 season gets underway. All that is needed is the weather to cooperate so they can get time on the field.
Looking to add to the historic program is Loren Hendrickson who is in his sixth season with the Vikings.
Vikings open season at NH

The season got underway Monday for the Decorah boys golf team as the Vikes traveled to New Hampton to take on the Chickasaws. Playing 18 holes, Decorah fell to the host 355 to 323.
New Hampton swept the medalist honors with Jack Shawver taking the top spot with a 76, followed by Kyle Glenn who carded a 79.
Decorah splits squad; SW joins Vikes in Hudson

The Decorah girls track team split its squad Tuesday night, with varsity members going to Hudson and junior varsity going to Waukon. After last week’s meet at Jesup was cancelled, South Winn added the Hudson meet to its schedule as well.
The Vikes finished just shy of the top spot in the team standings with 76 points behind AGWSR’s 83. The Warriors put up 40 points to tie for 10th place with Wapsie Valley.
Viking netters defeat Comets with adjusted line-up

In their second home meet of the season, the Decorah girls tennis team defeated Charles City Tuesday, April 11, 8-1. The varsity lineup was moderately adjusted to provide match play opportunities for the less experienced varsity members and up-and-coming JV players in both singles and doubles, and the Decorah athletes stepped up to the challenge.
In singles, Evon Leitz slid seamlessly into the No. 1 position, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-3; likewise, freshman Olivia Huinker moved into the No. 2 singles spot smoothly, winning 6-4, 6-2. With steady groundstrokes, Camryn Holland defeated her opponent at No. 3 singles; senior Jenna Hartz battled at No. 4 singles, winning her first set in a tie break but ultimately falling in a third-set tie-breaker. Newcomers Klaara Short at No. 5 singles and Mara Branum at No. 6 singles didn’t back down in the face of tough competition with both winning tight matches.
Strong start for SW linksters

It was a solid two-day period for the South Winn golf teams, as the boys’ squad hit the links for the first time Monday at Waukon and both teams were in action Tuesday at Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette Tuesday in an 18-hole triangular.
Boys only
The South Winn boys golf team competed in a nine-hole triangular event at Waukon Golf & Country Club against Waukon and Crestwood on Monday, April 11, finishing third. Waukon came out victorious with 160 followed by Crestwood with 166 and South Winn with a 171.
Senior Carson Wenthold made some noise in the first outing of the season, finishing third with a 38. Also contributing to the Warrior scorecard were Jackson Goltz, 42; Carson Streeter, 44, Braiden Todd, 47, Jordan Baumler, 48; and Brady Lensing, 53.
Trojans bring home several golds from N-P

It was a busy night on the oval for the Turkey Valley track teams Tuesday as the Trojans competed at Nashua-Plainfield, bringing home a total of five gold medals.
At the end of the night, Northwood-Kensett took the girls’ team title with 112 points with Turkey Valley bringing home sixth with 58 points. In the boys’ team race, it was the host, Nashua-Plainfield, reigning supreme with 161 points and the Trojans finishing with 49 points in seventh place.
Decorah girls take bronze at Top Gun

On the most beautiful weekend of spring, Decorah traveled to Waterloo’s Byrnes Park on Saturday, April 8, to compete in the Top Gun tennis tournament. Hosted by Columbus Catholic, this tournament presented the Decorah team with some of the toughest competition they will encounter until the latter part of the season. Each girl played a total of 78 games of tennis, and undoubtedly each would say the day’s competition improved their game.
New opponent for Vikes

The Decorah boys tennis team hosted a top 1A Minnesota team from Saint Paul Area, Mounds Park Academy Saturday, April 8. Mounds Park brought a tough style of play from an experienced team and beat Decorah 9-2.

It was a very even game between the Decorah girls soccer team and Dubuque Senior Saturday, April 8. Playing on the road, the Vikes were unable to find the goal and were defeated 2-0.

Talent and experience will rule the course for the South Winn girls’ golf team in 2023.
The Warriors return four letter winners who were able to contribute low scores for the team a year ago.
They will be coached by Glenna Munuswamy, who is in her fifth year leading the women.

The Decorah girls’ track and field team hosted the Viking Invite Thursday night, featuring eight teams from across the area.
The Vikings won the meet with 174 points, South Winn took home fifth with 65 points, while Turkey Valley was eighth with 26 points.
Warriors second, TV boys fifth at Postville

Getting out on a nice night for a meet, the South Winn and Turkey Valley boys’ track teams competed at the Postville Foster Kiesau Relays Thursday night.
The Warriors finished the meet with 103 points, taking the runner-up spot in the team standings behind Waukon who tallied 165 points. The Trojans were fifth with 69 points.
Decorah grabs win over NFV

The Decorah girls’ soccer team (1-1) picked up its first win Thursday, defeating North Fayette Valley (0-1) on the road, 2-1.
After a scoreless first half where both teams had some good opportunities to score, Decorah came up with two early goals in the second half, which was enough to keep a spirited NFV side at bay.
