Bulldogs edge SW golfers

The South Winn golf teams not only had to battle MFL MarMac on the links Friday, but the Warriors also fought a second day in a row of wind and cold temps. In the end, both squads fell to the Bulldogs at Tri City Golf and Country Club near Luana.

Vikes headed to Drake Relays

The Decorah girls and boys track teams will be well-represented at the Drake Relays held Thursday through Saturday, April 27-29, in Des Moines.
It starts with senior Julia Alberts competing in the discus Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Wind, temps prevail for linksters

The Decorah boys golf team competed at the Manchester Golf Invitational Friday with the wind and cold conditions making the day very challenging for the Vikings.
Solon had the low team score of the day with 323 with West Delaware the runner-up with 326. Medalist of the meet was Carter Lamont with a one over par 73 from Vinton. Runner-up with a 74 was Pella’s AJ Hoekstra.

Cold weather can’t stop Vikes

The large Decorah girls track team split in two Tuesday night, with part of the team at Charles City and another group at Crestwood.

Champions at CC
Athletes who were at Charles City put on quite a show collecting 191 points and besting the field of eight teams.
“We had some good performances and several events ran seasons best,” noted Coach Cristy Nimrod.
In all the Vikings had 10 events take first.

Eight goals lead to win over NH

There was no lack of offense for the Decorah boys soccer team (4-1) as the Vikes put another tally in the win column after defeating New Hampton (4-5) at home Tuesday, 8-0.
A hat trick (3 goals) by Jake Magner led the Vikes to the victory to go with one assist. Ian Giddings, Jimmy Valdez and Jeramiah Rediske all had a goal and assist as well with senior Benson Newhouse scoring his second goal in as many games. Easton Luzum scored the final goal for Decorah.

DHS netters produce 6-3 win

On a chilly but sunny Tuesday afternoon, the Decorah girls tennis team battled the Osage Green Devils for the second time this season; and, for a second time, the Vikings emerged victorious, beating Osage 6-3.
Highlights of the evening included Annalise Skrade giving up only one game at No. 1 singles, Olivia Huinker leaving the courts shortly after with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 singles, Camryn Holland earning a bagel with an 8-0 victory at No. 4 singles, and freshman Addie Maki not only playing her first varsity match but earning her first varsity win at No. 6 singles, finishing 9-8 (7-5) in an epic battle that ended with a tiebreaker.

Vikes enjoy sun and good play

With the recent snow melting and sun shining, the Decorah boys tennis team hosted a depleted Winona Senior team which graduated most of last year’s team Tuesday coming away with a 9-0 win.
“I was pleased with overall effort after prom and the attitude the team brought against a young opponent,” said Coach Matt Anderson.
Individual match results were unavailable at press time.
The Vikings are in Waverly Friday, April 21, playing the Go-Hawks and Boone in a triangular at 2 p.m.

Wagner takes high jump gold at Hudson

It was a cold night on the track for the South Winn girls track team Tuesday night as the Warriors competed at the Hudson Relays a day later than scheduled due to the snow that impacted northeast Iowa Monday.
Overall, the Warriors lit up the oval, placing fourth out of 16 teams with 74 points. AGWSR was the overall champion with 102 points.

TV girls seventh at Cresco

Taking seventh overall, the Turkey Valley girls track team had a good night Tuesday, competing at Crestwood.
Two events earned bronze to lead the Trojans. In the 200-meter dash, Morgan Wenthold raced to third in 28.02 seconds. The freshman combined with Ryann Schmitt, Kinsey Reicks and Jenna Throndson in the 4×100 relay at the end of the night to take third in 55.97 seconds.

Ready for a run; Vikings eyeing top-three finish

The Vikings return four letter winners and a group of linksters ready for their turn to shine.
Helping the team lower their scores all season long is head coach Rich Gaard, who has been with the program for 54 years.

With some cornerstones to the program, along with a list of new members and a new coach, anything is possible this spring.

Decorah girls shine at Relays; SW ties for fourth

The Decorah girls track team sent its seniors out in style Thursday night, hosting the Decorah Relays under picture-perfect conditions.
The Vikes won the team title with 159 points in the final home meet of the year. South Winn finished in a three-way tie with 57 points with Charles City and Mason City.

Redenius saves four from goal in shootout

It was a big day on the green for the Decorah girls soccer team (1-3) as the Vikes defeated Grundy Center-Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-1) in a shootout, 3-2.
“This game may have been exciting for the fans to watch but was nerve-wracking for the coaches,” admitted Coach Loren Hendrickson.
The game started very well for Decorah, with the Vikes getting some early opportunities to score, and also getting control of possession for much of the first half. The game went to half time scoreless.

Trojans sweep WC on links

The Turkey Valley golf teams notched a pair of UIC wins with a sweep over a much-improved West Central squad at Jackson Heights Golf Course Thursday.
“We had another beautiful night for golf with the exception of some strong SW winds, but the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves out there on the course,” said Coach John Reicks. “We are still working on some things including course management and proper golf etiquette, but I really like what I see at this early stage of the season.”

Decorah captures eight golds at WD

The Decorah boys track team got a chance to see some new competition Thursday, competing at the West Delaware Invite.
The Vikes picked up 154 points, taking second at the seven-team invite. Waverly-Shell Rock was the team champion with 212 points.
Decorah had three individuals and five relays bring home titles. In the long jump, Kaiden Quandahl topped the field with a leap of 20 feet 6 inches. William Hahn was crowned the discus champion with a best throw of 138 feet 4 inches and breaking the tape in the 1600-meter run in 4:59.22 was Garrett See.

Vikings get on home course

It was a near perfect day for golf Thursday as the Decorah boys golf team hosted eight other squads in the Decorah Invite, held at Oneota Golf and Country Club.
It was the first home meet of the season for the Vikes and just the second overall.
Decorah fired a 351, taking eighth in varsity team scores. Holmen (Wis.) finished first with 311 while Holy Family Catholic came in second with 313.

Busy end to week for netters

Three meets in two days led to some tired legs for the Decorah boys tennis team who competed against Clear Lake Thursday morning, Mason City Thursday afternoon and Aplington-Parkersburg Friday afternoon.
The Vikes prevailed 9-0 against an experienced Clear Lake squad that played numerous very tough sets before Decorah adjusted to the very windy conditions and turned up the pressure.

Viking netters top Oelwein

A small group of the Decorah girls’ tennis team traveled to Oelwein for a dual meet Friday and with Oelwein’s small team meant the Vikes were already ahead 5-0 going into the match.
Victories by Evon Leitz at No. 1 singles, Mara Branum at No. 2 singles and Corina Timm at No. 3 singles put the Vikes up 8-0 going into doubles. Anika Grinna and Kaitlyn Bjork partnered at No. 1 doubles and battled to a 9-7 victory after getting down 7-5. Their victory secured a 9-0 win for the team.

SW sweeps medals in triangular with Vikes, Indians

Following a week delay, the Decorah girls’ golf team finally got on the course Friday, while it was the Warriors’ third time touring a course in 2023. The two squads competed at Waukon with South Winn having the top team score with 240, followed by the Vikes’ 250 and Waukon 272.

SW gets UIC win over Eagles

It was a busy end of the week for the South Winn golf teams with a conference meet with Clayton Ridge and the girls’ team finally competing in Waukon after the initial triangular with the Indians and Decorah was rained out.
