Strong night for Decorah swimmers

Just four days removed from its last competition, the Decorah girls swim and dive team were back in the water Tuesday night, challenged by Cedar Rapids Kennedy. With a large yet young team, the Vikings put up a good effort but fell 113 to 64, while the JV lost 87 to 42.
Trojans stretch their legs

After waiting nearly three weeks to get a competition in due to heat and dry conditions, the Turkey Valley cross country teams were on the course for its second meet in four days. The Trojans competed at Starmont Tuesday night and saw improvements.

Facing the always-tough Go-Hawks, the Decorah volleyball team (6-5, 1-1 NEIC) fell in four sets to Waverly-Shell Rock (6-12, 2-0 NEIC) at home Tuesday night. Set scores were 17-25, 19-25, 25-20 and 18-25.

“It was a very physical game and in rivalry games like this, you cannot overlook anybody and our team did not do that. We are happy to get the win. They made many great plays and we were able to make a few more,” said Viking head football coach Pat Trewin following Decorah’s win 34-6 over Crestwood Friday night.

For the third straight season, the South Winn football team (0-3, 0-3) wasn’t able to match Wapsie Valley (2-1, 1-0) in size and speed, dropping Friday’s contest, 27-0, on the road.

Following a week hiatus from competition, the South Winn volleyball team (5-7) returned to action on Saturday at the Jesup Tournament. The Warriors finished third in the six-team round robin tournament going 3-2 on the day.
Bucksa wins gold, silver and bronze at Wahawk invite

The Decorah girls swim and dive team weren’t deterred by the level of competition at the Wahawk Invite hosted by Waterloo West Saturday, including Liz Bucksa. The freshman came home with individual gold and silver, along with a bronze in a relay.
Stiff competition at Luther’s All-American Race

Teams from throughout the Midwest met on the Luther College campus Saturday competing in the area’s largest cross country meet of the season.
With 376 points, the Viking girls finished 11th in the team standings, posted a 3:00 spread and average time of 21:47. It was a spread of 52 seconds with an average time of 18:05 for the Decorah boys in their 15th place finish in the field of 32 teams.
The South Winn girls put up a valiant effort in the varsity race with an average time of 22:27 and spread of 1:12 to earn 15th place with 466 points.
Turkey Valley did not have enough harriers in any race to field a team score with just four runners competing.

Things were clicking Friday night for the Decorah football team (2-0, 0-0) as the Vikes defeated West Delaware (0-2), a team that had beaten the Vikes handily the past two seasons. A pair of second quarter touchdowns lifted the Vikes to a 21-7 win over the Hawks at home.

Opening the district season at home without its starting running back, the South Winn football team (0-2, 0-1) knew it had a tough task Friday night against North Butler (2-0, 1-0) at home.
The Warriors put up a fight but fell to the Bearcats 22-14.
Warriors finally get to compete

A week after heat and humidity canceled the opening meet of the season, the South Winn cross country teams were set to compete at Charles City Thursday; however, severe dry conditions also stopped that meet, leaving the Warriors scrambling for a competition. With just a day’s notice, South Winn managed to squeeze into a race at Tri-City Golf Course, hosted by MFL MarMac, Thursday, and came away with the girls’ title and fifth place for the boys.
Decorah nets win over Cadets

It took just three sets for the Decorah volleyball team (6-3, 1-0 NEIC) to pick up its first league win Tuesday night at home over Crestwood (2-4, 0-1 NEIC). The Vikes defeated the Cadets in a trio of close sets — 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21.
Busy weekend for Warrior spikers

The South Winn volleyball team (2-5) had their home opener on Thursday evening, hosting a quad with Central Elkader, Crestwood and Waukon. Saturday, the Warriors competed in the New Hampton Labor Day Weekend tournament with some of the top teams in the area, and went 1-2 for the day.

There is a full roster, for the Decorah girls’ cross country team to pull from during the 2023 season with a mix of veterans and young athletes hungry to get back to the state meet.
After missing out on a trip to state again last season, the Vikes look to head coach Cristy Nimrod for guidance in her 22nd season, along with assistant coaches Jeff Wettach and Sarah Nowack.
