Vikes finish fifth at NEIC tourney

Putting the regular season and the Northeast Iowa Conference behind them, the Decorah volleyball team (13-17, 2-8 NEIC) finished fifth over the weekend at the league tournament.

Having won the North Central Swim Conference meet three years running, the Decorah girls’ swim and dive team came up short Saturday. The Vikes hosted the meet at Luther College.
NCMP won the title with 314 points, while Decorah captured 275 points ahead of Grinnell’s 225.
Roe, Decorah girls win NEIC title; boys second

The race to the postseason started with a bang for the Decorah cross country teams Tuesday, as the Vikings claimed three of the four titles and a runner-up finish.
The girls, ranked 14th in Class 3A, finished with 43 points, besting No. 20 Waverly Shell-Rock with 65 points. The boys, No. 15, secured second place with 51 points, behind Class 2A No. 2 Waukon who had 43.
The JV squads also did their job, sweeping their races.
Wagner wins football contest

Randy Wagner is the winner in week five of the football pigskin picks football contest.
Wagner, of Fort Atkinson, missed two games as did Decorah’s David Luhman; however, Wagner’s guess of 68 was closer in the tie-breaker than Luhman’s 78.

In anticipation to heavy rains in the area two games (SW/BCLUW and NFV/Crestwood) that are in this week’s (week 6) Pigskin Picks contest have been moved to tonight (Thursday, Oct. 12) to hopefully lessen rain chances, so those games will be thrown out since entries are due after the games are played. If any other games get moved ahead, they too will be thrown out and not considered.
XC state-qualifying meet info

The state qualifying cross country meets are Wednesday, Oct. 18 (Class 3A/4A) and Thursday, Oct. 19 (Class 1A/2A). The varsity girls run at 4 p.m., with the varsity boys at 4:30 p.m.
Warriors “dig” out a win

The South Winn volleyball team (17-12, 7-1 UIC) captured a win in their regular season finale 3-1 Tuesday in front of a full house on Dig Pink Night over Central Elkader (10-19, 5-2 UIC).
TV escapes West Central

It was a rough night on the court for the Turkey Valley volleyball team (12-12, 6-2 UIC) as the Trojans survived to win 3-2 over West Central (4-21, 3-5 UIC) on Senior Night Tuesday. Set scores were 25-7, 23-25, 25-11, 20-25 and 15-12.

Stepping onto the home court for their final regular season game Monday, the Decorah volleyball team paid tribute to North Winneshiek school by wearing replica uniforms as the Vikes (12-13, 1-4 NEIC) fell 0-3 to Caledonia (Minn.). Set scores were 17-25, 15-25 and 16-25.

Registration for the 2023-2024 Decorah Basketball Association (DBA) season is now open and will close Monday, Oct. 23.
UIC cross country meet moved to Wednesday

With rain in the forecast for later this week, the Upper Iowa Conference cross country meet has been moved to Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club, hosted by South Winn. The junior high will run at 3 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 3:30 p.m., then varsity boys at 4 p.m. Admission is $6.
Warriors squeak by North Tama

After a shaky start to the season, the South Winn football team (4-3, 4-2) earned its fourth straight victory and its first playoff bid since 2019 Friday with a 34-28 win over North Tama (2-5, 2-4).
“Our offensive line, led by center Tristen Bodensteiner, dominated the line of scrimmage most of the night. In the fourth quarter we had some breakdowns on defense and special teams. We will continue to work and improve in the areas that we lacked execution, but it’s nice to see our players’ effort remains a strength for us every week,” said Coach Jason Ohrt.
No. 5 Vikings fall to No. 12 Marion

It all came down to what the teams could and couldn’t do in the fourth quarter as the Class 4A No. 5 Decorah football team (5-2, 2-1) fell to 12th-ranked Marion (5-2, 2-1) at home Friday 28-21.
“It was a tough loss. We made many great plays and moved the ball well. We fought to come back twice but could not finish things with another score. It was truly a four-quarter game. Our penalties seemed to hurt us more than theirs hurt them,” said Coach Pat Trewin.
No. 6 Dons too much for TV

In typical Don Bosco fashion, the eight-player sixth-ranked Dons visited Jackson Junction Friday night and dominated the Turkey Valley gridiron. However, the Trojans (4-3, 3-2) weren’t shut out as they suffered a 59-14 loss.
“We had some bright spots but too many missed tackles on defense and a turnover let the score get away from us early. We will have to regroup and get ready for the road trip to Riceville who’s only loss is to Don Bosco,” noted Coach Mark Scott.

Northeast Iowa Community College Cougar Sports Shooting dropped a close match against rival Hawkeye Community College at home on Sept. 30. The NICC team fell short to the RedTails 484-482.

It was a perfect night for the South Winn cross country invite, held Tuesday at South Winn Golf and Country Club outside of Calmar.
The Warriors hosted numerous squads in the meet. In addition to a junior high race, there was one girls race and one boys race, with no separation between JV and varsity.
